Yay, Minnesota!!!! It's so incredibly wrong to cut off people's access to vote!!! On our new #LibraryNice standard: this is a solid, unquestioned NOT achieving the standard. Let people vote to improve library funding and other legislation! And, feel some MN pride here!!
This year, Arizona + Tennessee enacted new laws restricting access to voting — continuing a trend we've seen since 2010 where state lawmakers nationwide started introducing hundreds of harsh measures making it harder to vote. bit.ly/2Vz8wIF
Idiots. In America. Are Burning Books. Read my rage with idiots and book burners. Stay to the end for my definition of the new concept "Library Nice." I'm now judging the world on this standard! #LibraryNice (these students failed it, btw) cmle.org/2019/10/14/idi…

An important thread for library workers especially now that we’re back in a “progressive” administration.
In my new role as Ruler Of All That I Survey (yes: my desk), I'm pointing out things that are, or are not, #LibraryNice. Jacking up prices of drugs people need to survive? Not #LibraryNice. In fact, it's pretty crappy behavior. Do what you can to protest this! #EmailALegislator

This is literally @DonnaLanclos' definition of #LibraryNice! “What’s most important is that you appear ‘nice’ – not that you engage, or treat people well, or listen. There’s only one proper way to behave properly, and then private behavior matters less.”
One of the biggest recent lessons I’ve learned is that no one is more unkind than the person who want to be seen as “nice.” Nice is not interchangeable with just, honest, or equitable, so people will be unjust, dishonest, and inequitable to defend it.
@MUEngLib, thank you so much for supporting and sharing my work! @heathermargar, when we think of "weaponized collegiality," colloquially you may see the term #LibraryNice. I recently talked with a #LeavingLowMorale study participant who offered a wonderful definition:
1/ I'm still considering where to submit my #LeavingLowMorale study, & I'd like to note a challenge to job hunting during such experiences (& the general presence of #LibraryNice) when it comes to #references requirements. A participant shared..
...Thinking about how "innovation" and library capital projects are the project-based and architecturual manifestations of #LibraryNice...
Within the realm of #LibraryNice, which encompasses a range of behaviors that weaponize #Civility and promote #VocationalAwe.
This is one of the causes of #deauthentication. You can't "real talk" because it may weaponized against BIPOC because non-BIPOC can't deal. See Also, #LibraryNice.
Hi. So in your experience with #LibraryNice, how do you perceive your role/title as a formal leader intersects with those expectations?

Dear. Goodness. I think we've uncovered #LibraryNice: User Gravitational Pull Level @DonnaLanclos Can you confirm?!?!?!?
4/Unless enough (& I mean "enough" - not "all" or even "most") folks in a group are willing to cede some power (whether gained through title, seniority) &/or right to comfort. Unless that "enough" disavows Oppressed Group Behavior. Unless that "enough" rejects #LibraryNice...

Re: @skeskali's #VALA2020 keynote - a discussion with @DonnaLanclos re: #LibraryNice and how it aids #silence and #complicity of workplace abuse in #LIS - in the guise of #collegiality.
Yes, this is the rub RIGHT HERE. But also, it's culture. No one is ever a "bad librarian," right? This is particularly insidious since "collegial" means being complicit in the current culture; conformity to the traditions of academia. bit.ly/2GEr6df
Hi. So in your experience with #LibraryNice, how do you perceive your role/title as a formal leader intersects with those expectations?
Yes, yes, yes. #LibraryNice definitely inhibits colleagues' ability to say 'No' to acts that support these -isms, and to simultaneously not say 'Yes' to acts that would smother/dismantle them!
