apply for grants to get funding!! YES ABSOLUTELY do this! check your local arts council, i've personally done this for specific youth services events, and it's a wonderful way to do larger/more expensive programming for your community #MassLib2023

"allowing children to have some controlled violence" (as a description of an activity) ACCURATE THO #MassLib2023

how "authentic" does it need to be? -does it need to look exactly like SDCC/etc? NO! -however, it should be a full day event with some resemblance to larger cons (multiple activities, mostly nerd/geeky/fandom things) -mix of passive vs. active (staff-run) activities #MassLib2023

don't forget -- some stations can run themselves! crafts, grab and go, activity sheets, etc. can also work backwards if needed. that is, "i have X staff members, how can i make this work?" #MassLib2023

who will staff the event? -do not need as many volunteers as you think! -take your space & activities and assign each a staff member -will still need regular desk/library staff ofc -bribe (hah) volunteers staff! post-event food/drinks is always solid #MassLib2023

space considerations: -what sort of meeting rooms do you have? -do you have an outdoor space? (weather permitting) -how much public space do you want to use? -remember: library will still also be open for general daily use that day, so those people will need space #MassLib2023

"oh no, my budget is only X dollars" -can be done on a shoestring! -what are your essentials? -do you want outside vendors? collectibles for attendees? t-shirts for staff? -plan around what craft materials you have -what might staff already have at home to share? #MassLib2023

These laws are meant to regulate the market only to increase it. Also, these businesses might face backlash if they tried to pull out of offering materials in this time of extreme censorship. We just need to be strong, and organize, to meet that challenge. #MassLib2023

What impact might legislation have on our ability to acquire materials? Some worry about the possibility of companies not selling ebooks in our state if this legislation is approved. The answer? They need our money 💰💰 as much as we need the books. #MassLib2023

How do we help out stakeholders understand this issue, why pricing is the way it is, and how they can help us on our advocacy? The MLA Legislative group is working on creating research, charts and graphs, etc. to help us show stakeholders what’s going on. #MassLib2023

Other legislatures (NY, CT, HI) were or are looking at ways to protect libraries & working on bills to access materials at a fair price. Our goals not only to give readers equitable access, but to be able to decide what kind of licensing works for us/our readers. #MassLib2023

Reciprocal lending through OverDrive (where Libraries users can borrow books from outside of their own networks) was created here at MLA — and it is now 14% of all MA OverDrive lending. When we get together, we CAN make big changes that benefit our readers. #MassLib2023

OverDrive goal: to be an advocate for libraries and their readers. Since the earliest beginnings of ebooks and digital audiobooks, they have been striving to bring us titles, and more flexible models at the lowest possible price. #MassLib2023

This is going to be an uphill battle. Librarians will be needed to advocate for this bill, and to work with the legislature in order to get it passed, and make buying more equitable for our libraries and constituents. #MassLib2023
