Mixed-ability classrooms make a huge assumption that the students performing poorly is an abilities problem. More often than not they just don’t care and are extremely disruptive to student who actually want to learn. The bottom 20%
I grew up in 'mixed-ability' classrooms and it was BORING af most of the time. I read my textbooks the first week of school and spent the rest of the year reading library books while the teacher had kids read aloud paragraphs of science or social studies. Kids who could not read.
Students of all ability levels gain socially, academically & motivationally from learning in mixed-ability settings. This view is informed by 37yrs of experience as a teacher, teacher educator & international consultant in Myanmar, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Egypt, etc.
High-achieving students do not experience academic decline in mixed-ability settings. Access to enriched tasks, flexible grouping, and differentiated instruction ensures advanced learners continue to make strong progress.
Apologies if someone mentioned this already, but a lot of the "mixed-ability" dynamic is the smarter kids being tasked as peer tutors (formally or otherwise), sacrificing their learning time in the process.
Ability grouping feels intuitive, but decades of research shows it often widens gaps rather than supports learning. Mixed-ability classrooms can do this through flexible grouping, targeted feedback, and open-ended projects (as you suggest). It is a wicked problem though!
