Mathematics homework in 2023 often has parents scratching their heads and admitting defeat. Oregon State University honors mathematics senior Madison Collins wants to help. Meet Madison: beav.es/TSG #TeamScience #Beavergrad #OSUScience #GoBeavs
Here’s a pic of me holding my own DNA!! In a time where genetic testing and genome sequencing is increasing in popularity, it’s important to think critically about who you give your DNA to. #osuscience #OSUBI213
Turns out I’m homozygous recessive for the PTC gene (a bitter compound found in 🥦), meaning I don’t taste the bitterness! 🙏🏻 #OSUBI213 #osuscience
A couple biology labs ago, we learned about using gel electrophoresis to see if we have the PTC gene, or the gene that allows us to taste bitter things! It’s a little hard to tell, but my entire group was homozygous dominant for the PTC gene. #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
Here in our Biology 213 laboratory we are using a technique called electrophoresis on the DNA taken from our cheeks, in order to determine if we are "tasters" or "non-tasters" for the products in our class! Based on this test! I am a Heterozygous Taster! #OSUBIO213 #OSUSCIENCE
In lab analyzing our DNA gel on the imager to see if our genes have the genotypes of a taster or a non-taster! From this picture, we are all non-tasters, but 2/3 of us are actually tasters! Something went wrong😭 #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
Doing PCR to determine our genotype for the PTC gene. This gene determines our ability to taste bitter PTC compounds which are commonly found in toxins. I was homozygous dominant. #OSUSCIENCE
This is a pic of a lab we did called gel electrophoresis&it shows us our genotype for an allele called PTC which tells us if an individual is able to taste bitterness. We isolated the specific part of the DNA that shows us if we have that allele in this lab. #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE

Did you know that broccoli contains a compound called Phenylthiocarbamide (PTC) that is responsible for a bitterness taste. The reason you may not like broccoli can because of your genetic makeup. #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
Congrats to @VirginiaMWeis for winning the @ICRSCoralReefs Eminence in Research Award! Much deserved validation for the Weis Lab’s reputation as one of the top places globally to study the molecular & cellular aspects of marine biology. #OSUscience #Aiptasia #Coral #Symbiosis

learning how to properly place our cheek cells in gel electrophoresis with a pipette #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE #BillNye
A thriving environment means a healthy place. Weeding the yard and the forests of invasive species can help keep it that way. #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
#OSUBI213 #OSUScience. Using a percentage points of the Chi-Square distribution inorder to determine whether our hypothesis of tasting PTC is rejected or not.
During Biology 213 Laboratory, my lab-mates and I analyzed our DNA within an imager to indicate whether we were tasters/non-tasters. As you can see in the image below, we are all non-tasters which in reality 2/3 of us were. Our data was ruled inconclusive. #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
In my biology lab, we’ve learned about genetic variation and the different phenotypes that can arise from it such as heterochromia #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
Genetic variation & selective breeding in wolves has resulted in diff. traits, like disproportionate dwarfism #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
In my biology lab I learned how to sequence part of my genome and found out I’m heterozygous dominant for the PTC gene which means I sort of tasted the bitter paper #OSUBI213 #OSUSCIENCE
