Hot take on building factories. If you’ve never managed or worked in a shop with 24/7 operations, you’re gonna hate it the first time you try to go live. Around the clock ops requires a whole different mindset and communication plan or you’re gonna have a bad time.
This is hideously, gruesomely true. And, for those unfamiliar, embedded systems, a.k.a. Operational Technology, a.k.a. OT, controls gas stations, power plants, water treatment facilities, water towers, dams, power distribution points...you name it.
If more people knew how insecure most embedded systems/IoT devices are, they'd shit bricks.
describing the possibility of interacting with another human being using a business term like "overhead" is just so rich. we are social animals man this is supposed to not be hard
Everyone talks about physician compensation. Almost no one talks about overhead. We debate how much CMS pays. Why procedural specialties are paid more. How physicians are reimbursed. But that misses the real driver of dysfunction: The single most expensive, least addressed…

Operator skills goes much further than the initial job at hand.. wait for it.🫡
Vivek doesn't understand overhead rates. x% overhead means for every $1 spent for direct costs, an extra x cents goes toward overhead. An overhead rate of 70% means .7/1.7 =~ 41% goes to overhead. 70% going to overhead would imply a 233% overhead rate, which doesn't exist. 1/
NIH grant distributions have turned into a joke, but the most ridiculous part is that *70%* of the federal funds often granted to these universities goes to fund their “overhead” slush funds which subsidizes DEI & related nonsense, NOT to actual scientific grant recipients. When…
The only overhead a store can realistically cut is staffing, and management will be given impossible to reach sales and costs goals. They'll start cutting hours to stay under costs goals, and store performance will continue to decline as a result. 2/3
everyone yelling about this doesn't understand how low the overheads actually are lmao
This is how I would describe Operations: You define how things should work (Process). You document and communicate it (Policy). You monitor and enforce it (Administration). Creatives get drained in operations roles, and feel like someone is sucking their blood. It's the…
You feel efficient and powerful, because after your promotion to middle management/operations, you have much higher leverage than as a grunt. But you miss the fact that while ops management is higher leverage than grunt work, it's still much lower leverage than direction-setting
Overheads are designed to crush attacks that are low to the ground. Something going underneath an overhead is never supposed to happen
Consistently excessive overtime is a sign that management has failed to properly address staffing needs and does not understand the nature of their business. 100% management failure. At one time I would have sent you a big bill after telling you that.
Over 600 nurses in Alberta topped $130k per year. One even made $240k They are running what is essentially an overtime scam. 3% cut is just the tip of the iceberg on what could be trimmed. taxpayer.com/newsroom/hundr…
This is the opposite problem and it is just as fucking bad as devs not owning their shit in prod. No... It's worse. YOU CANNOT GET RID OF OPS. You can minimize *ops toil*, but doing so requires a level of operational expertise that precious few software engineers possess.
And maybe if they haven’t let the Pro category languish for four years, they wouldn’t have needed to sprint till they were blue to remedy the situation? Overwork is nearly always just a synonym for “bad management and poor planning”.
I hate the way "ops" means "shit work that shouldn't even exist" to so many people. _hate_ it. operations engineering does not consist of firefighting your shitty software, it is the science of delivering value to users.
I'd only quit if I was required to be on call, and not allowed to address underlying problems calling call outs. If I wanted to work like that, I'd be pure ops...
Your overhead cost is about 6 times that And you're useless
The Scottish taxpayer had to foot a bill of over £22,000 for the #SNP's #indyref2 consultation. Public funds wasted. goo.gl/hg4KBh
