My backpack and shoes are falling apart. Replacing them competes with food and other bills. Sub-poverty income = destitute. Too poor to help oneself. I may appear put together but can I afford to replace it if it breaks? Usually not.

If you're poor, it's a problem because you'll look useless to some people due to the fact that you can't contribute to their life financially. And if you're rich its still problem because everyone wants you to come through for them when they need you.
