#Protolang7 comes to a close with a plenary talk by Katja Liebal: "What nonhuman primate gestures can - and cannot - tell us about language evolution" #protolang7
#Protolang7 already started! Really honored to be the first speaker of the general session together with Ljiljana Progovac
Self-domestication might have tied together (taming of) aggression with cross-modality, facilitating the evolution of language(s) 👆 Our talk at the #Protolang7 conference is now available. Enjoy! youtube.com/watch?v=IfHvkU… #evolution #Human #linguistics
Interesting talk by Sverker Johansson. Today we have ~7k languages, but how many were there in the past? He estimates ~0.002 turnover rate for modern langs and millions of protolangs. Crude estimations, but food for thought, as this suggestst high ancient diversity #protolang7
Multimodality is the future of language! Plenary by @ozyurek_a on how multimodality should shape our ideas of language (and thus its evolution) at #Protolang7
Second talk delivered at #ProtoLang7! (interested in the slides? Contact me! The organizers are also recording the talks😍..
#Protolang7 Is there a relation bw soc structure & ling complexity? @abenitezburraco, Progovac, Gil propose correlating ling & soc params & genetic signals with results from Gil's association experiment (n=69 langs). Would be interesting to see causal inference stats on this!
What precursors we are looking for depends in part on our definition of language, what modality we are interested in & their evolutionary origins. Liebal focusses on gestural theories of language origins #protolang7
Are the gestures of pre-linguistic children and non-human great apes more similar or more different? There are similarities, but more differences, so we might be comparing apples & oranges #protolang7
Check our #Protolang7 talk about potential correlations between declarative/procedural memories and language variation youtube.com/watch?v=SCpWZi…
Liebal goes on to discuss definitions of gesture. They are directed at a recepient, goal-directed, gesturers persist to achieve goals, wait for a response & use them flexibly. Intentionality --> important part of gesture definitions but is operationalised differently #protolang7
There are different reasons why gesture sequence emerge, it might be because there's no response, to make adjustments to an ongoing interactions or fine-tune the communication - possibly orangutans continue gesturing even after a response because they're excited #protolang7
@MichelDeGraff from @MITHaiti challenging prejudice about creole languages in his plenary at #Protolang7
Cool work on complexity and simplicity in language evolution across species by @Limor_Raviv and @cedricboeckx. They start with an interesting discrepancy between animals and humans in how social complexity shapes the complexity of their communication systems #Protolang7
On the multimodality of language: inspiring talk by Asli Ozyurek @ozyurek_a #protolang7 #language #gestures #multimodality
David Gil talking about bare and constructional (semantic) compositionality (and language evolution) during the last #Protolang7 conference. Enjoy! youtube.com/watch?v=Lew3KG…
We have repurposed the #Protolang7 Twitter account, and we will use it as the official account of the conference series from now on (note the new handle). Stay tuned for more information about #Protolang8 in Rome bit.ly/3FDoYAy
Ditto! Important message suggesting that our view of language shapes our theories of language evolution. Only a multimodal view accounts for sign languages, speech, gesture, pictorial, etc. Great talk! #protolang7

The first few #Protolang7 videos are available on our Youtube channel! Unfortunately the upload of the videos will take significantly longer than expected because @YouTube has a frustrating and totally intransparent daily upload limit

Also massive kudos from me to my #protolang7 conference co-organisers Karim Baraghith, Corina Strößner, Marcel Ruland and most of all of course @hartmast
I would also like to massively thank the organisers @hartmast @symbolicstorage et al for what has been one of the best lang evo conferences I've attended, even though it was online. 1/2
Also, many of the talks have been recorded. Stay tuned for further updates! - Those participants who have agreed to being recorded will hear from us soon and can then decide whether their talk should be published. #Protolang7

Thanks to all #protolang7 organizers for putting together an excellent conference - great discussions organization timing !!@symbolicstorage @hartmast and wonderful tweeter @jonasnoelle see you all nexttime and multimodal gurus in @GestureSociety conf in chicago
#Protolang7 is done, but the exciting news is that next year there will be a joint conference @JCoLE2022 organised by @protolang7, @EvolangConf and @evolinguistics in Japan🇯🇵🍙
This was a great summary of last 20 years nonhuman prımate communication by Liebal - but the review made clear research on multimodal communicatin is as scarce now as it was 20 years ago but needed!! Thus we know very little how multimodal ape commun is #Protolang7
