Q4. @aecrossing mentioned the “hidden curriculum”: those unwritten and unofficial rules that we are assumed to know as students. #firstgen & low SES students, what surprised you about the hidden curriculum in your programs? #PsychClassChat @APA @APAGradStudents @APAEducation

Taking note of all these hidden fees 👀📝#PsychClassChat

This is something I’ve been very anxious about as I begin my Ed.S degree in School Psych this fall as a 1st gen low income student. Any advice on how to deal with feeling inferior to your cohort members? I appreciate your candor! 😊

Twitter - we want to hear from you! We encourage you to pose questions to our presenters and panelists and share your thoughts/reactions with #PsychClassChat! We have 5 discussion questions coming up! #Psychology #AcademicChatter

@cmonique1023: We need to put resources (e.g., funding, assistantships) out there for everyone to access on day one! Otherwise, “students need to out themselves by saying they can’t do something because of cost.” #PsychClassChat

The conversation doesn't have to end! If you couldn't make it to the live event, you can click through the tweets in this Twitter Moment to see what you missed and join the conversation. We can't fix what we don't talk about. ⚡️ “#PsychClassChat

@cmonique1023: “If this is going to be something for all students, remove $$ barriers so that all students can participate & do not need to make the hard choice about what they are going to give up to have a seat at the table” #PsychClassChat

Social events in doc programs = networking! @cmonique1023: “There is a lot of socializing that we do in academia that is off campus & has some type of cost attached to it. We need to think about what it costs for someone to be ‘social’ in a program” #PsychClassChat

@aecrossing: “Students with multiple minoritized identities can experience compounded stress, so we need to always keep in mind to support students from as many identities as possible” #PsychClassChat

@melmwilcox: “I got some of the best lessons of my life in classism and they were not in class and not from books. They were from first hand experience of classism. Those experiences were really demoralizing” #PsychClassChat

Great work @bridgetmakol @ashleyscastro #psychclasschat let's keep the conversation going!

Dr. Sharon Berry: “No detail is 2 small to share to help [students] b/c if you never knew anyone who went on internship, it can be shocking what is expected. Socialization into the profession as a new professional is really critical” for 1st gen/low SES students #PsychClassChat

Higher ed is far from being a culturally neutral environment for low-SES students, notably because the system is built & organized according to taken-for-granted, middle- & upper-class cultural norms, unwritten codes, or ‘rules of the game’ (Stephens et. al, 2012) #PsychClassChat

@aecrossing: Our discussion is in line w/ the idea of the “hidden curriculum, which can be applied to multiple minoritized identities so that you provide well rounded support.” As a school psych student, she sees this as just like “treating the whole child.” #PsychClassChat

Also, check out Q3 to see #PsychClassChat thoughts on #1stgen / low-SES students’ strengths!

The admissions process: Consider why we need standardized test scores. We know that systemic educational barriers in K-12 are a confound when it comes to interpreting SAT & GRE scores. Why maintain this barrier, enforced by systems of oppression, any longer? #PsychClassChat

- Budget of ALL costs associated w/ study - Record of all supports on campus 4 LIEM students (e.g., financial aid, food bank) - Estimate of debt accrued upon degree completion - AND, I know that app fees have a purpose, but they're SO cost prohibitive! #PsychClassChat

Q5. @prof_burchett and @justinlmatthews have a document they’re sharing with graduate programs about how to make the admissions process more equitable in #psychology. What ideas do you think should be incorporated into the document? #PsychClassChat #AcademicTwitter @APA

It's morally and financially irresponsible to require in-person schooling with the almost-certain future of moving online. It costs money to move, to travel, to prep for physically attending school. Why is @UWMadison doing this to students? #PsychClassChat @1stGenPsych #COVID19
