We were on Python 2 for ages because even though Python 3 came out over a decade ago the library support for 3 lagged badly. Makes you appreciate that the MSFT stack and Java try very hard to maintain downward compatibility.
python is so good we have python2 and even python3 not many cases with other languages
the year is 20XX. python 3 has been deprecated in favor of bash, jq, and curl. python 2, nevertheless, retains widespread adoption
Good. Pip has dropped support for Python 2 pip.pypa.io/en/stable/news… As an amateur dev, the transition from Python 2 to 3 has been somewhat painful. But, it was necessary. Maybe that is why enterprise apps created using Java as it comes with a long backward compatibility
2008: Python 3 released 2010: Last major Python 2.x release 2020: python 2.x officially deprecated, no future releases 2075: The Earth is an uninhabitable wasteland where paperclip AIs battle COVID-63-mutated super-humans. Google still returns Python 2.7 docs as top result.
If you've been putting off updating to Python 3, you should know it has some pretty impressive new features...
Python 2 is now officially retired. Python 3 was released 11 years ago. Watching companies and research communities transition for way longer than expected is yet another reminder that change is hard, especially change that breaks backward compatibility. >>> print "Goodbye World"
Python 2 will officially retire on 1/1/2020. So, why did they even create Python 3? - Python 2 was developed before Unicode, it's Unicode support is wack. - A str object in Python 2 can hold both textual & binary data, not cool. - It's a mess on the fundamental level to fix 👇
"We have decided that January 1, 2020, will be the day that we sunset #Python 2. That means that we will not improve it anymore after that day, even if someone finds a security problem in it. You should upgrade to Python 3 as soon as you can." python.org/doc/sunset-pyt…

#Python2.7 was an excellent release and it took many, many iterations for Python 3 to catch-up. Arguably, 3.6.1 was the first release that was better than 2. When 3.8 arrives, it will be a clear, all-around winner.
Remember that Python 2 will reach end of life on 1/1/2020. For the impact on *your* project, see python3statement.org
It's 2019 and Python 2 is slowly trickling out of the PyData stack... e.g. matplotlib v3.0 & ipython v6.0 dropped Py2 support already, and the current release of SciPy (v1.3) and next release of numpy (1.16) will be the last to support Python 2. More at python3statement.org
Good news: #Python 3 adoption continues to rise. Bad news: A lot of Python 2 users don't seem to know that the end is near (14 months left until Python 2 becomes completely unsupported).
Last month, 39.3% of downloads from PyPI were for Python 3 (excluding downloads where we don’t know what Python version they were for, like Mirrors, etc).
The most common thing I hear about Python 2->3 migration is "big companies will never upgrade". Well, apparently Dropbox and Facebook just aren't big enough :) A great blog post by @Dropbox about how they are migrating to Python 3 (I'm waiting for more!): blogs.dropbox.com/tech/2018/09/h…
There are only two hard things in computer science: removing Python 2 as the default Python on your computer and installing Python 3.
