City of sea squirts. Rich biodiversity colonizes the shallow sill of a fjord in Admiralty Bay. Dave Barnes, Chester Sands, Theresa Gossmann and Nadescha Zwerschke have just finished exploring seabed life and carbon sinks emerging from glacier retreat! #SDAScience
After over 7 weeks at sea the #SDAScience expedition is finally at an end and the science team flies home tomorrow. A gentoo penguin turned up at the harbour to see us off!
Heading towards the Weddell Sea and saw icebergs for the first time!!! Lots of penguins and fur seals as well 🐧🫶🏼🦭 #SDAScience
After a few amazing days on the Falklands (spending most of my time with penguins), we’re packing our bags and getting ready to board the #SDA for some actual science! Time to see how good my sea legs really are #SDAScience
The trawls and cameras revealed a range of weird, wonderful and fascinating creatures living in a habitat dominated by cold temperatures, enormous pressure and soft mud! When the samples return we can start the difficult job of putting names to them all! #SDAScience (4/4)
The #SDAScience expedition has completed its scientific tasks in time to relax and enjoy the beautiful weather before heading to our Signy Island Station to close it for winter. 🌊 🚢 ❄️
We’re this happy to be crossing 60°S and getting our metal-free towfish in the water to collect surface water for trace metal analysis! The towfish is connected to over 50m of tubing and feeds straight into our clean lab onboard the #SDA! Pretty darn cool! #SDAScience
The weather has taken a turn for the worse and the #RRSSirDavidAttenborough is navigating choppy waters near King George Island. The deck science has to wait until things calm down later. #SDAScience
Spent the morning cleaning all the trace metal CTD bottles and had a test launch with the new robot arm, we’re finally ready to get some actual samples onboard! 1st Drake’s Passage CTD @ 200m going into the water as we tweet! #SDAScience
Some cracking views for helideck running here on #RRSSirDavidAttenborough. Perfect use of the helideck :) #SDAScience
And finally, Bosun's Mate Alan Howard took crafting to the next level by *whittling actual sculptures* 😲 Here's a whale's tail made to celebrate a colleague's special birthday while on the #SDAScience trials, as well as a whale for Alan's son. Alan... we want one. Please? 5/5
Yesterday the #SDAScience expedition closed Signy Station for the winter and picked up the station team. Next stop is the Falkland Islands!
Using a range of equipment, the #SDAScience team have set about trying to understand this unique habitat. We deployed up 7.6km (4.7 miles) of winch cable at a time (over 100 km/62 miles in total), to lower 2 camera systems, 2 types of trawl and the CTD into the abyss! (3/4)
Amongst the mud-dwelling creatures were sea spiders, sea pigs (types of sea cucumber), soft corals and spiky scale-worms! These animals come from the test deployment at 600 m but our next trawls will be much deeper! #SDAScience 📸@glupglup2
1st sea spiders of the trip & 1st time I've ever seen them alive. These 2 Nyphons (australe I think) came up in the multicorer. 2nd 📸 is under UV, highlighting their "hairs". One was carrying round a large brood. #SDAScience #seaspidersaturday
Yo-yo CTD from the #RRSSirDavidAttenborough and a chance to get off the ship to see the ship! #SDAScience
I finally get to see the RRS Sir David Attenborough today! I'll be setting up for some #SDAScience on the polar science trials expedition, leaving from the beautiful Falkland Islands on Tuesday :) Stay tuned for our progress! With @OceanEarthUoS @BAS_News
All done for Project RaCE:TraX on SD025, lots of seawater and mud to analyse thanks to all the support and enthusiastic help from amazing crew and scientists ❤️ #SDAScience continues, on to moorings and Hesperides Deep!
Last night the seafloor biology team on #SDAScience tested two types of small trawls to sample animals from the sea floor. The sample came up with lots of mud so we all got messy sieving it away and revealing the amazing creatures inside! 📸@glupglup2
The first weeks of the BIOPOLE II science cruise on the #SDAscience have included trialling all of the instruments onboard in preparation for the three phases of science (Polar Ocean Ecosystems Time Series - Western Core Box, A23, and BIOPOLE).🔬🌊 #BIOPOLE2 #SDAscience

A doctrine is nothing without scripture, and dies with opinion. And so it will be with the concept that earth is scarcity opposed to sea as nations/peoples. #Adventist #sda #sdascience #happysabbath #Biblestudy #Holyspirit #supernalism #Adventism
Brilliant day yesterday touring the SDA labs in preparation for the #SDAscience that we will be doing on the @BIOPOLE_NERC cruise later this year
We worked on over 60 field science projects, as well as a huge campaign of science trials on the #RRSSirDavidAttenborough. During the #SDAScience trials, the team took the first ‘clean’ seawater chemistry samples for the new ship using the trace metal CTD. 📸 @griffiths_huw

Amid an intensive schedule of night fishing & instrument deployments, @griffiths_huw found quiet moments to make this ink drawing of whales seen on the #SDAScience expedition 🐳 Featuring long-finned pilot, minke, fin, humpback & orca. We reckon this has pointillism vibes? 2/5
Back home after 2 months away aboard #RRSSirDavidAttenborough after successful #SDAscience trials cruise. A really awesome mix of science on board, from seawater sampling to mud scooping, to krill counting. The ship did us well :)

Today the #SDAScience expedition is being treated to a rare opportunity to travel through the Prince Gustav Channel, named after the prince of Sweden by Otto Nordenskiöld of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition. Stunning scenery between an extinct volcano & the Antarctic Peninsula!

Over the past week @griffiths_huw & @morroghmax, the crew and #SDAScience team have been testing the new deep sea research capabilities of the #RRSSirDavidAttenborough in one of the deepest and least explored parts of #Antarctica, the Hesperides Deep! 🧵(1/4)

And we’re off! Busy last couple of days setting up the #SDA for science: getting the trace metal CTDs ready, cleaning the clean lab and setting up the radium detectors in the lab. Quick fuel stop in Stanley and then sailing overnight to our first CTD stop!#SDAScience @GW4plusDTP
Small boats like "Erebus" allow the crew and scientists to go places where a large ship can't (including close to icebergs). A 10m long research vessel that allows scientists to carry out research in shallow, inshore waters, and transport people and supplies. #SDAScience
