Interesting NDS update. I'll add: 1) 2018 NDS summ focused on China AND Russia; 2) Homeland defense was still a key priority; 3) DOD-level priorities on homeland def & China since Jan25 have been fairly consistent (SECDEF Message to the Force, Army Transformation memo, #SLD25).
The new strategy would largely overturn the focus of the first Trump admin’s 2018 National Defense Strategy, which focused on deterring China. The shift “doesn’t seem aligned with President Trump’s hawkish views on China at all,” a Republican foreign policy expert told me.
Let me state a few points: 1. Despite my criticisms earlier, at #SLD25, Sec. Hegseth delivered a message of reassurance for ASEAN defence ministers. The forward presence of the US Navy in the region’s waters is appreciated, as it would limit the scope of PLA(N) escalation.
Sg has no ongoing territorial dispute with China. In fact, Sg has been engaging China so that she will evolve to be a responsible power in Asia in a multi polar world. Personally, I see Malaysia no less greedy than all the other countries making a grab of the resources in SCS.
President Trump & Sec. Hegseth have made noise at #SLD25, & empty threats against Xi Jinping, but has no policy or principles that allies (eg. Australia & Japan) & partners (eg. India & Taiwan) can trust as they seek the next deal with Beijing that Trump can crow over.
