I struggle with this part of the exam. Seems quite artificial and kids find it really overwhelming at first- probably due to not doing much in BGE. We have incorporated comparison of texts in BGE now but I am not sure it is having an impact because you can be more holistic in BGE
I have chosen The Conegatherers this year because we studied War Poetry in S3 and I think there are some good links to be made. I usually teach Duffy but I am less keen on the updated list. #ScotChat #Q1 #cpd #ScotText #N5English #HigherEnglish

I love to see an annotated paper! Still see lots of pupils reluctant to do this. Does it take a while to get your classes really confident with this? #scotchat
This is a far better way to demonstrate understanding of key ideas and themes rather than churning out garbled commonality sentences. Makes perfect sense to me and you’ve used a cone gatherers too. #scotchat

#ScotChat Definitely dependant on the class. A class that finds N5 hard need the basics of the texts. Those that could get an A with their eyes’ closed I tend to go deeper, and prep them for Higher.

I sometimes encourage those who find timing difficult to do the final question first, then tackle the shorter ones. They can often pick up more marks that way
#ScotChat Snobbery of teachers towards texts. The central belt focus of almost every text, and no new writing. The marks for quotes at N5 that get them a pass and then it’s all ripped away at Higher.

Couldn’t agree more that pupils studying a text two years in a row struggle to analyse at H level. #scotchat
I agree, can't think of much worse than studying the same SST two years in a row. I also think it's so much harder to uplevel the depth of analysis on a text you've studied at a different level too? I reckon it's easier to start afresh with a new text.

It’s just hot seating but after they each have a round, they get to ask me questions. Every time I get an answer wrong they get a point. I get a point for each correct answer. It’s good for a lively class #scotchat
