Today on #SeaTurtleTalks I’m gonna talk about Genetic diversity and possible natal origins of the olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) in a feeding area in southern Brazil #TurtleTuesday The southern region of #Brazil is an important foraging area for #SeaTurtles. 1/7
estamos listos para participar mañana en el Seaturtle talks #SeaTurtleTalks será emocionante y varios tortugueros podrán interactuar
5/7 Leatherbacks also showed a unique increase in sensitivity near 480 nm. This peak sensitivity corresponds with wavelengths around 475 nm that penetrate deepest in clear ocean water (ideal for #deepdivers but unnecessary for shallow water inhabiting cheloniids). #SeaTurtleTalks
3/7 Leatherback sea turtles are the largest and most distantly related extant sea turtle species. They are uniquely deep-diving, pelagic across all life stages, and forage exclusively on gelatinous zooplankton making their visual environment quite distinct. #SeaTurtleTalks
1/7 #SeaTurtleTalks Automatic identification of immature green turtle behavior from accelerometer reveals key marine conservation area in the Caribbean Accelerometer records animal movement & body posture. Signal interpretation can be difficult & limits its use on #seaturtle
2/7 Hatchling sea turtles crawl toward the lowest and brightest horizon when they emerge from nests at night #seafinding. Differences in spectral sensitivities driven by different life histories could lead to the independent evolution of this innate behavior. #SeaTurtleTalks
4/7 Y-maze studies revealed that leatherback and cheloniid hatchlings were both most sensitive to shorter wavelengths but differed in their overall sensitivity. At most tested wavelengths, leatherbacks were 10-100x less sensitive than their cheloniid relatives. #SeaTurtleTalks
6/7 Perceptual sensitivity thresholds were below the light levels available on the beach at night, but leatherback hatchlings took longer to reach the water and exhibited circling behavior more often under new moon conditions. A difference not seen in cheloniids. #SeaTurtleTalks
#SeaTurtleTalks 'Eye in the sky: Using drones to spot and sex turtles' 1/7 Finding turtles at sea is hard but we need to count males and females to work out sex ratios. We compared surveys done by boat and by drone at Heron Island to see how sex ratios changed during the season
4/7 #SeaTurtleTalks 📋 In-depth interviews with community #SeaTurtle monitors revealed diverse values & stewardship motivations: ➡️ care & concern for nature 🐢🐳 ➡️ social responsibility to future generations 👶👧 ➡️ stewardship identity & cultural connections to the ocean🌊
1/7 Evidence for the independent evolution of visual perception during seafinding by hatchling leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) 🐢#SeaTurtleTalks #TurtleTuesday
7/7 Together this suggests the evolution of visual perception during seafinding is not driven by the visual environment of the beach shared by both leatherbacks and cheloniids but instead the differing visual ecologies of these species after their initial crawl. #SeaTurtleTalks
3/7 #SeaTurtleTalks PSOs on Ship A spot a leatherback turtle 20m off their starboard bow. They plot the animal in the Mysticetus app, which displays it for them as they go by.
5/7 #SeaTurtleTalks Ship B PSOs coordinate with the captain to turn away from the turtle (which they never see themselves in the rough seas!) and maintain at least 270m from its last known position.
6/7 #SeaTurtleTalks People-people relationships are just as imp as people-nature relationships in motivating conservation action. Recommendation: integrate relational approaches into the design of #BiodiversityConservation programmes as a pathway for achieving social impacts.
6/7 #SeaTurtleTalks While Ship B probably would have not struck the turtle anyways (the ocean is big) sighting sharing reduced the risk much further. It’s 2021. Why aren’t we *all* using the most modern technology to protect animals? 6/7
3/7 #SeaTurtleTalks But 🐢 conservation in 🇹🇿 generates limited 💰 for people + opportunity cost of forgoing access to turtle eggs & meat So why conserve 🐢? We used a #RelationalValues (RV) lens to explore stewardship motivations & experiences of conservation participation
This event would not have been possible without the presenters and the engagement of the participants by asking questions, commenting, liking, retweeting. We hope you enjoyed all the amazing presentations and discussions in the three #SeaTurtleTalks events.
The end of the Panel discussion, our third and final event, officially marks the end of the #SeaTurtleTalks! A huge thank you to the panelists, organizers, and the #ISTS Board of Directors for your support and helping reconnecting the global and wonderful #seaturtle family.🐢💚🐢

1/7 #SeaTurtleTalks: Trends in Florida sea turtle size at maturity Located on the east coast of Florida, USA, the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge hosts tens of thousands of sea turtle nests every year. It’s an ideal site to study population trends. #TurtleTuesday 🌊🐢
