This snipe eel, Nemichthys, had a pretty big meal! Helping #SiphWeb better understand midwater communities #deepseafish
Life is tough out here for a a bristlemouth, Cyclothone signata! Lots of predators to worry about like the Pacific Blackdragon, Idiacanthus antrostomus and the Pacific Viperfish, Chauliodus macouni. #SiphWeb is working to learn even more about midwater food webs! #deepseafishes
Predatory specialization has been considered an evolutionary dead end. But we found that #siphonophore specialists can evolve into generalists, and into specialists on other prey. In @PNASnews with @caseywdunn @beroe #SiphWeb Cover photo by @underwaterpat pnas.org/content/118/8/…
Benthalbella dentata, the Northern Pearleye is a midwater lizardfish with not only telescopic eyes but also special organs called pearl organs that may allow them to expand their range of vision! Collected on the @RVSallyRide for the #SiphWeb project with @anelachoy #fishes
Here it is, what you’ve all been waiting for- a Spiny Dreamer, Oneirodes acanthias. Encountered on our final tow for the #SiphWeb cruise on the @RVSallyRide lead by @anelachoy #anglerfish #deepseafish #ichthyology
For my @YaleBiosphere YIBS DDIG project I am building a DNA barcode reference database for the California Current zooplankton and micronekton, which will facilitate accurate identifications of midwater predator gut contents #SiphWeb
Siphonophore tentilla display a wide diversity of shapes and sizes. We found that shifts in diet are associated with changes in the state, mode of evolution, and internal correlations of tentilla & nematocyst morphologies. #SiphWeb
Cystonects like the Portuguese man-o-war are highly specialized in fish prey and calycophorans are primarily specialized in small crustaceans. Physonects are a morphologically-diverse, paraphyletic group comprised of generalists and specialists on different prey types. #siphweb
Siphonophore tentilla and nematocysts are phenotypically integrated structures for prey capture. We found convergent evolution among species with similar diets. Published in @iobjournal with @caseywdunn @beroe #SiphWeb doi.org/10.1093/iob/ob…
A Swallower, Chiasmodon subniger, with a very full belly collected yesterday on #Siphweb with @anelachoy’s lab! Prey is spread out in the midwater, so you never know when your next meal is coming. Might as well eat a lot! #deepseafish #ichthyology #foodwebs
“I don’t always use the midwater, but when I do, eyebrows” Ceratoscopelus townsendi, the Dogtooth Lanternfish, has large luminescent organs over its eyes. Why?? Encountered on the @RVSallyRide during the #SiphWeb cruise with @anelachoy #deepseafish #lanternfish
Our new synthesis paper led by @lizheth_sd summarizes current knowledge on the trophic roles of different #siphonophore species as predators and prey in the #midwater food web! aslopubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/lo… #siphweb with @beroe @anelachoy & @caseywdunn
Today I gave my talk at #OSM20 on the exploration of #siphonophore diets using DNA metabarcoding under the project #SiphWEB
This Highfin Dragonfish, Bathophilus flemingi, has a stunning bronze-gold sheen under angled light. Encountered on the #SiphWeb @RVSallyRide cruise lead by @anelachoy #dragonfish #deepseafish #lilcutie
Is this a baby tuna?? Found in a shallow March plankton sample from the California Current #SiphWeb #ichthyoplankton #zooplankton
Frame grab from our blue-water dive yesterday shows a #ctenophore in fishing posture — if you look close. Mola mola providing the backdrop. #DEEPC #SiphWeb cc: @MBARI_News @NSF_GEO @NSF_BIO
Last morning of hotel quarantine before boarding the @RVSallyRide for two weeks with @anelachoy’s lab and others for @NSF funded #SiphWeb!
What I think is a young Rubynose brotula, Cataetyx rubrirostris, from the #Siphweb cruise on the @RVSallyRide with the @anelachoy lab and others! #midwaterfish #deepsea #foodwebs
During the #Siphweb cruise with @anelachoy, I watched The Wicker Man (1973). Great horror film. I got the theme “Corn Rigs” stuck in my head and during the final 10-hour marathon deepsea fish IDing session, I let it play on repeat and ruined my Spotify statistics for the year!

We imaged siphonophore tentilla at the @yalepeabody_iz. The CreatureCast videos were animated by the fantastic Riley Thompson. Big thanks to the crew of the R/V Western Flyer @MBARI_News. This project was funded by @NSF #SiphWeb siphweb.org

Siphonophores are modular colonial jellyfish. They use specialized tentacle side branches called tentilla to capture their prey. The shape and nematocyst content of tentilla plays a major role in determining what siphonophores eat. #SiphWeb #CreatureCast youtu.be/wv_RL8acLWA

Oh wow, coming full circle! This ID is for a #SiphWeb trawl sample for community composition from an earlier cruise! Yeah Alepocephalid was my first guess, got no other shots today but I have in ethanol

It’s an alepocephaid or platytroctid tough to tell from this angle. Got a different shot? I’ve been IDing a bunch of them on the #Siphweb cruise on the @RVSallyRide the last couple of days so they are fresh in my mind.
