"[SB 18] is not a bill that’s advocating for accountability. Words like incompetence and university standards are not well defined & as people have stated are gonna be points of vagueness & fear that’s created amongst our student body as well as our faculty." #txlege #TxforDEI
.@SherylCole1: "DEI is meant to protect everyone, regardless of race, color, or creed." #txlege #TxforDEI
Despite Texas having the highest population of African Americans in the country at 13.2%, we only make up 4.5% of the full-time faculty at UT Austin. For Texas A&M it’s even less at 3.6%. These stats reflect decades of discriminatory practices. We need DEI. #txlege #TxforDEI

Samuel Jefferson: "I do not mean to be condescending, patronizing, or rude, but I do not believe that this legislature has put in the work to understand what DEI is or the role of DEI offices and programs." #txlege #TxforDEI
"Those students [in the College access programs] are the reason that I am now at UT studying education policy with the hope of being Rep professor, but bills like this are driving people like me out of the state and out of the professoriate." #txlege #TxforDEI
.@BucyForTexas: "As a civil rights attorney, are you aware of any cases where a court has found DEI programs to be discriminatory or unconstitutional?" - Antonio Ingram: "Zero." #txlege #TxforDEI
Antonio Ingram, @NAACP_LDF Assistant Counsel: "[And so] we have to look at DEI as a continuation of efforts to create belonging and not as an undue preferential treatment for certain populations." #txlege #TxforDEI

Public testimony on SB 17 is now beginning. As always, we’ll give you the highlights of the members of the public testifying. #txlege #TxforDEI
After going through all the remaining testimony, ultimately SB 17 is left pending. The chair has motioned for the committee to adjourn. #txlege #TxforDEI
With witnesses finished for SB 18, the bill is left pending in committee. 74 people have testified against the bill in total and 0 people (!) testified in favor of the bill. The committee is now hearing SB 17, which would punish universities with DEI programs. #txlege #TxforDEI
The Committee Chair just mentioned that there are 141 people scheduled to testify on SB 17. We’re going to be here for the long-haul as the people of Texas defend DEI late into the night and into the early morning. #txlege #TxforDEI
We made it y’all! Thanks to each and every single one of y’all for braving it out into the wee hours of the morning in defense of DEI! You made it clear to the higher education committee that Texas is better with DEI! #txlege #TxforDEI
This is horrible for higher education in Texas: "With an 83-60 vote, the Texas House gives its initial approval to #SB17, banning DEI offices at Texas public colleges and universities." This thread highlights those representations who spoke out against it. #txledge #TxforDEI
Thank you, @SherylCole1. #txlege #TxforDEI

Good afternoon everyone! Today, #SB17 is being heard on the house floor. This bill would require universities to close their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) offices. Follow this thread as we follow the events of the day. #txlege #TxforDEI
Tomorrow, #SB18, which plans to do away with tenure as we know it, will be heard on the House floor. Fact: Only 4% of tenured faculty in the entire state of Texas are Black. SB 18 would impact this group and reduce our diversity. Texas needs protected tenure. #txlege #TxforDEI
