I think you get the idea .... But why shoud you care? It is some really nice and interesting hardware which can execture pretty much any linux program. If the code vectorizes ... then you get really good performance.

That stream was fun. Went from 40 tokens a second to around 1400 on the NEC #VectorEngine We are able to run Llama2 7B at around the speeds of a 4090. We can probably squeeze out a bit more performance by switching the weights to fortran order too.

The NEC #VectorEngine is an accelerator only if accelerators run Linux user space programs with full POSIX support. I don't blame .net for not having it but it would have been nice for my niche usecase of thinking how to do variable length vectors in Rust if there was prior art


🥹 send me a PCIe card/usb/ethernet connected and it's gets it place next to a #VectorEngine and a Risc-V Vector Extension 0.7 device .


So the idea is you have a loop, you don't know often it will run and the hardware will make a good decision what vector lengths to use every iteration gives it's capabilities. All those questions RVV has are valid question and the #VectorEngine also has to answer them. It does so

I am convinced of this concept becoming important. Not only because the economics makes sense (and will shift around the pricing structure a lot) but that the person who presented it worked on #DMTCP before. An underrated piece of software i'd like to see work on my #VectorEngine

Habemus MPI. I didn't notice NEC made their development packages available. You can soon run MPI applications on both the CPU and #VectorEngine and offloading the parts that run well on the VectorEngine to it while keeping file io and co on the CPU. That's huge.

A Pubnix is a public access unix system. You ask nicely, get access to it and don't cause an inconvenience. No money changes hand. The machine might be unreliable. As far as i know i am the first hobbyist running a NEC #VectorEngine in EU. So if some ssh keys make it my way ...
