Oh for the EU #WaterFrameworkDirective and the prospect of the #EuropeanCourtOfJustice for rogue States

Speaking of the #WaterFrameworkDirective, what ever happened to all the data from the WFDIreland website? I've noticed that there's a lot of older information that used to be easily found online is very hard or impossible to access now.

It was a fundamental problem with accessing ordnance survey Ireland data when I was working on the #WaterFrameworkDirective. Public funded data needs to be available to the public. Not a difficult concept.

The @swanireland commissioned @ihedelft to provide a report on situation of Hydromorphological alterations, #WaterFrameworkDirective and Ireland. Internal draft shared with Department, and currently addressing comments to deliver final version.

All the @EPAIreland reports on decline of Irish rivers over my time when @tcddublin are presumably still there, unless someone decided were just taking up too much space. It all began mid 1970s The EU #WaterFrameworkDirective of 2000 was supposed to stem the decline.

Lady's Island Lake in Wexford: "Despite a multitude of legal protections — which should have prevented this — we've still ended up with what is essentially a dead lake" Dr Elaine McGoff, An Taisce Head of Advocacy #waterquality #waterframeworkdirective #biodiversityloss

Lady’s Island Lake in Co Wexford - a protected habitat - is being described as a “dead lake” due to severe pollution. Campaigners are now calling for a Government taskforce to tackle the crisis at one of Ireland’s largest lagoons. #VMNews

And so it goes on.... Recalling all those @EPAIreland reports over three decades, and the noble ambitions of the EU #WaterFrameworkDirective of 2000

Another week another article in the mainstream Irish media highlighting Teagasc's failures. Everyone'd saying the emperor has no clothes but he's still walking around in the nip. rte.ie/brainstorm/202…

Clean water or more cows: the battle over Irish nitrate pollution

Could be a post from ca 2000, when signs of nutrient enrichment in Great Western Lakes were already evident. Three river basin management plans along since then. EU #WaterFrameworkDirective came into effect in 2000.

Signs of significant algae growth in Lough Corrib are leading to growing concerns with locals again this year about the health of the lake. Carra Mask Corrib Water Protection Group are increasingly worried about the high phosphate levels being found on the Corrib catchment.

With only two years remaining of the #WaterFrameworkDirective to achieve 100% 'good' status. With 8%, 3% and 0% improvements for the directive’s three cycles so far, the chances of getting anywhere close to this appear slim at best. 3/3
