We're mathematicians...of COURSE we think algorithms are important. BUT, we want our students intuitively exploring the concept through activities and examples before we throw steps at them. This is one of the last pieces of the puzzle-not the first. #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
We call this a faded example. At this point, students have seen a few examples, and we want them to try pieces on their own. We encourage them to fold their page back at the dotted line before working - they can check their answers after they try. #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
We get asked ALL the time, "But does your book have enough practice for my students?" The answer is a resounding YES. We have hundreds of problems in each chapter, but also lots of concept questions. They've got to know WHY they are calculating! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
Do you teach any "reluctant math learners?" The students that take our postsecondary Business Calculus course have no desire to be there; 20% of our students are HOSTILE (yes, that is actually a choice). Check out their transformation this week! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
Just like mama birds, we want our "babies" to leave the nest one day and be able to continue their math journey. Empowering them with tech tools where they can check their answers is part of that independence. Let's help our students FLY! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
We believe that every student can be taught math in a way that makes sense to them. Are we servicing the majority of our students with our classes being heavily lecture-based? Making math more accessible to ALL students opens that STEM pipeline! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
We want our students to understand that we aren't pulling this out of thin air. We point back to the giants of calculus who can show us the way. Check out these scribbles on Newton's work-even the big guys make mistakes-an important lesson for us! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
🎶 Do you want to build a pyramid?🎵 We encourage our students to cut out desk ornaments for all of the integral and differentiation rules. We then have an activity asking them to compare their two sets. A physical representation of the FTC! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
Before students ever hear the word "tangent" in calculus, they've heard it in the context of conversations! But hey - these things are related! Here's a great activity for them to relate relate "going off on a tangent" with the tangent of a function. #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
If you look hard enough almost anything can be a function! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #changetheequation
Here's the thing - we aren't shying away from complex topics; we are breaking them down to help our students actually understanding them. These are students who enter the class saying they aren't a "math person." @joboaler would say that is bullocks. #calcmindset #deconstructcalc
Our students tend to say it best. Come check out what they are talking about! #calcmindset #deconstructcalc #changetheequation
We think part of our job as educators is to help students understand what it means to be a mathematician. Each journal has a unique set of "math morals" highlighted throughout the book to show our students just that. #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #whatISamathematician
Do your students know what it means to be a mathematician? Help them understand some qualities of the profession through our math morals. Each chapter has 3-4 unique qualities a mathematician possesses. What would you add? #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #changetheequation
Are you familiar with Hortensia Soto's work on embodied math? We want our students to feel these concepts all the way to the tips of their fingers! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #embodiedmath
Where can your students look around and see the math that they are doing on paper? We think 2D pictures of skylines might remind students of Riemann sums. Can they draw a function that would match? #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #changetheequation
What if the Newton vs. Leibniz calculus debacle happened today? Would we see them making the rounds on CNN or Ellen to plead their case? Our Calculus Wars graphic novella asks that same question! #calculushistory #deconstructcalc #calcmindset
Serious question - have you ever showed your family or friends a math textbook? We all have advanced degrees in math and agree that we never have! This student thinks our journal is so *cool* that they showed it off. #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #changetheequation
Some of these words are used by our students regularly. Which ones are associated with rates of change? Work to explicitly make connections with the world around them. #calcmindset #deconstructcalc #changetheequation

Math truly is all around us. Send your students out on a scavenger hunt to discover all of the different places they can find rates of change. I bet they never thought of some things in that way! #deconstructcalc #calcmindset #changetheequation
