The absolute fucking AUDACITY of this company to not include how certain factors (eg, word count, formatting, amount of pre-editing) will affect our pay in the new model. I wrote in and asked for a full fucking schedule of fee components. They can eat my whole ass. #editinghell

Just had that moment: Sent a 7,000-word chapter to editors. They asked so many questions it ballooned to 14,000 words. Their response? "GREAT! Now cut 7,000 words and we're good." Academia, why you gotta be like that? 😩✂️ #AcademicWriting #EditingHell
In September I edited close to 40k words of scientific manuscripts and made... $700 💀 (which is more than I usually make for that amount of work tbh) I'm now unemployed bc again bc they reduced our pay even more & I refused to sign the new contract. #editinghell

Update on this: they still won't tell us how the base fee will be calculated 🤦♀️ & are eliminating the performance-based bonus in lieu of a gamified system with a lower limit of 50k words/month (unattainable now in my subject area due to lack of available jobs). #editinghell

It's super hilarious that this week's #editinghell newsletter was all about how "not to sound like AI" when making light edits. Not ONCE have I worked on a document that needed light editing (of 1000+ jobs). And if your editors write like AI, YOU NEED BETTER EDITORS. #YIKES
Based on personal experience, I think instrument misidentification isn't confined to SEMs. I'd say 50-60% of my #editinghell jobs failed to identify instruments at all in their methods sections. Failure to mention QA/QC measures is also a huge problem.
