Working on a #COVIDVaccine team at a retirement home with a great (25 yr old) RN. She said stuff like “you must be a foody” & “bust a move” to the residents & was shocked that those were unfamiliar phrases to them #LanguageChanges

My Italian isn’t great, I know, but I’m pretty sure ‘latte’ shouldn’t be pronounced with a glottal stop. 😠 #languagechanges #language #languages #italian #english #coffee #cafenero #travel #pronunciation

Bernstein says that "gender" is not a substitute for "sex"--but then, what is? #languagechanges

Unpopular opinion: I sort of like the word "bae." #LanguageChanges #GetOverIt

The definite article "the" emerged during the Middle English period. #languagechanges

The Great Vowel Shift occurred during the later Middle English period, between 1300 and 1500. #languagechanges #newvowelpronunciation

In Middle English, 2 new diphthongs, <oi, oy>, appeared. They were borrowed from French. #languagechanges

Between 1100 & 1300, English lost a lot of its complex inflectional system for gender, case, & number. #languagechanges

The modern structure of subject + object + verb came about during Middle English due to the loss of most inflections. #languagechanges

Even the term ‘808s’ meant something quite different 20 years ago… …but we STILL insist that are esoteric political definitions are highly stable and devoid of nuance when convenient. #languagechanges #808sAndPolitics Can we get an episode on the word ‘808’? @JohnHMcWhorter?

Perhaps genderqueer went the way of faggot, dyke, and tranny. #languagechanges

Pre-19thcen, "awful" meant something that was deserving of respect or full of awe. Mid-1900s, "awesome" was the word that took up these positive meanings and "awful" switched to the negative one we have today. #languagechanges

Just saw the phrase "build off" in a very respected periodical, in an article on the development of language no less. I can't stop the changes, protest as I might. What should I do? I am having a hard time accepting this. #languagechanges #metaphorbroken

Embrace the human ability to generate words! Dictionaries describe, don’t prescribe. #linguists also describe. “Irregardless” is understood, consistent, and similar to other negative morphological processes in English. #LanguageChanges, my friends! Personally, I am fascinated.

So when one stops peeving and actually looks at the science of language, Irregardless is part of a particular systematicity in linguistic cognition rather than being some grotesque outlier. And personally, I think that’s beautiful.
