Hey #m68k assembler cracks out there! I want to transform a 32 bit register containing 16-bit words u and v into a 19-bit value consisting of 9 bits of each v and u (and a 0 lsb). As the Motorola is incredibly slow on shift operations, is there a faster way to do it than this?

Optimization is getting increasingly difficult, but this means I'm closing in on the limits of the #m68k processor. Making sure that all active variables fit into the registers was important, and fitting two fixed-point 16b values into one 32b register helped. Also, bit-shifting

Today I remembered that on #m68k-powered machines (like #AtariST and #Amiga), you can save precious registers by combining two 16bit fixed-point values into one 32bit register, albeit at the loss of 1 bit of precision. Poor man’s SIMD! #retrocomputing
Me? I'm finding more about unusual UNIX systems of old, in particular- #m68k #siliconGraphics workstations & the #sunMicrosystems #386i, nobody had seen these emulated. I'd like to solve that problem when my life gets stable.
