Here’s a neat find from Environmental Educator Mark Hurley—a wasp #mantidfly (Climaciella brunnea). 😮 Oddly enough, it’s neither a mantis nor a fly. The body and coloration mimic a paper #wasp, but the grasping, or raptorial, forelegs tell us they’re unrelated to wasps.

“A girl with kaleidoscope eyes.” The eyes of the #mantidfly, #Climaciella brunnea, are bulging & highly colored—I’m mesmerized by them. I won’t speculate on their ability to hypnotize prey; however, as I watched, this #spider walked straight into the mantidfly’s clutches!

It’s #mantidfly season! I was lucky to spot this wasp mantidfly, #Climaciella brunnea, perched just above another insect I was watching. #Mantispidae can be hard to find since they often rest upside down under leaves. This made my day! More pictures to come of this “fascinator”.

I would be lying if I said I wasn’t really excited to see a #mantidfly this evening! This is, #Climaciella brunnea, which mimics a Polistes wasp. Inhabitants of old fields & etc. These are predatory on small insects & even eat other mantidflies, but also consume nectar/sap.

“Any day I find a mantidfly is a great day!” A convincing paper wasp mimic, this #mantidfly was hanging out on indian grass. Their infuriating tendency to rest upside down & move around present challenges to the photographer-but it is worth it to see such a fantastic beast!
