It's not rigid expensive baseload, it's reliable generation that doesn't need 2 x transmission or 100% backup gas. Did you know #Nuclear + batteries needs far fewer batteries than Wind + solar + batteries? That's because #Nuclear is reliable.
Grids with #Nuclear are cheaper. Grids with more renewables are expensive. This is the lesson from Europe. The same story holds in Australia, mainland grids with more renewables have more expensive power than those without.
What is consistantly ignored is #Nuclear long term operation. Nuclear becomes significantly cheaper when long term operation is considered. While #Nuclear's cost up front it high, future generations will have the lowest cost form of power.
OK so that that's 1200GW x solar's Capacity factor 0.25 which is 400GW of effective. China has 300 GW of new coal in construction. They have about 50GW of #Nuclear under construction. The Chinese grid has a peak load of 1600GW. So yes big numbers but proportionally nothing new.
