Somehow, I need to find time to get into at least a little bit of #Jruby 10 later today. Good thing that I already have Java 21 on my computer. #Ruby #RubyOnWindows #Programming
Since #RubyOnWindows is less talked about, I will just leave there that pik works quite well for my needs: notepad.onghu.com/2021/ruby3-win…
What is the exact problem/ concern? Rails mostly works. For PG, somehow, this is the most popular post on my blog: notepad.onghu.com/2021/portable-… I've been meaning to write one for a newer version. I'm happy to try to help (no book needed) cos I still use #RubyOnWindows
That said, installing Ruby on Windows is quite easy and fast. Also, native gems work almost perfectly. notepad.onghu.com/2023/ruby3.2-w… #RubyOnWindows
thanks for doing this. I know that Ruby is at 3.2 but I like to use 3.1 as the oldest version that I play with and then use 3.2 to see if it all works. As for slowness, very likely, it's because I'm running #RubyOnWindows - but was just surprised how fast 1.9 started up!
I hope that there is a video. I would love to watch that. I know that #RubyOnWindows has a reputation to be difficult but for most part, it just works. It is slower, there is no YJIT but for many applications, it works fine since Ruby 2.4 when the RubyInstaller changed.
There is a native Windows environment and that works perfectly. Ruby installs and does almost everything except stuff that's specifically built for *nix-style systems. Rails 7.1 runs fine on Ruby 3.x, the databases run fine... I wish more people were aware of it #RubyOnWindows
#RubyOnWindows 😔 but every new Ruby makes other things faster also usually, so there is that!
I'd recommend it for Ruby (I do a lot with #RubyOnWindows) & do file the occasional Rails inconsistency on Windows (incl. 1 more coming soon) but yes, I'd develop Rails on Windows, but not deploy. Ruby on Windows is slower than others (due to file I/O) but still very good!
Thanks to the #RubyInstaller team, #Ruby 3.3 is already available on Windows. My illustrated guide to installing and running #RubyOnWindows is updated and available at: notepad.onghu.com/2023/ruby3.3-w… #programming
Great to see Windows featured! I've got a similar guide for #RubyOnWindows with an extra tip or two: notepad.onghu.com/2023/ruby3.3-w… and if you need to remove an older installation, see: notepad.onghu.com/2022/uninstall…

How to Install Ruby on Windows, macOS, and Linux
Updated September 2025: Now friendly for Linux/WSL users! This is my take on making a tutorial on...
If you're waiting to try #Ruby 3.4 on #Windows, the RubyInstaller is now available. I also created my illustrated guide to installing it: notepad.onghu.com/2024/ruby3.4-w… Happy New Year! #RubyOnWindows #programming
On #ruby30th, I'm delighted I discovered it & grew to really like it - back in 2005. Now, I wish it continues to grow, and stays alive in all its forms including #RubyOnWindows and #JRuby. Also, I hope to keep creating useful content for Ruby devs. Thank you @yukihiro_matz
OK, crisis averted. It was an error installing psych & it gets sorted if you do a gem update. Thanks to the stellar work of the @rails and @rubylangorg teams, #Rails8 "just works" when running with #RubyOnWindows. Link: notepad.onghu.com/2024/rails80-r… #ruby #programming
uh-oh...! #rails 8 failed to install on #windows for me - time to get deeper into it and figure out what went wrong! #programming #ruby

I totally understand that, and I know your involvement 👍 esp even as a subscriber to graceful. I don't mind that Rails runs better on WSL, but I really want #RubyOnWindows to _stay_ a thing.
That said, #RubyOnWindows without WSL is not a problem at all any more. Rails also runs mostly OK but yes, not a production setup for numerous reasons.
Want to learn more than you expected about how #ruby loads a native gem? Part 2 of my "Learning by Reversing a Native Gem" is now available and includes this (IMO) fantastic sequence diagram! Link: notepad.onghu.com/2023/learning-… #programming #rubyOnWindows
Part 1 of my new "Learning by Reversing" series explains how a native gem looks in #ruby. It covers the background to the gem we explore. From Part 2, we'll look at how the bits hold together. notepad.onghu.com/2023/learning-… Warning: long. Comments welcome! #Programming #RubyOnWindows
