Scott Institute Systems Scientist @PMoutis is delivering a Scott Institute/@Metro21CMU Lunch and Learn today that's focused on "Rethinking Power System Architecture for Serving Exurban Residential Paradigms." We've got a packed room in the UC! #SmartGridNerd #PowerSystem
Thank you ALL for the "love", r/t & "follow"s. If you're a fellow #SmartGridNerd, head to my "Media" or to my web panay1ot1s.com for more #PowerSystem, #Energy & #SmartGrid 🐦🧵 & stories. Special thanks to @ieee_pes & @hubofml for the r/t! (risking block from @jack 😅)
We must not structure a market product on a misconception or on wrongly defined (if not pseudo-scientific) terminology. We must not even discuss on such terms. WT+PV are NOT unreliable resources. As simple as that! #smartgridnerd -n/n
Feel free to point out any mistakes and misinterpretations I did! We only win from these #energy exchanges... #smartgridnerd -n/n
I have a paper under review showing exactly how demand charge pricing is an incentive for pooled (NOT community scaled/located, but behind-the-meter w/ shared ownership) PV-battery hybrid, even though at a max of ~30% penetration for mostly residential feeders. #smartgridnerd
If I'd somehow conclude all this, I'd say that thinking of our grids as more unbalanced and/or less stable, is a recipe for developing innovative methods that will revolutionize our thinking on #electricity & not just handle day-to-day operation. More to come! #smartgridnerd n/n
I got one better for you. Using a coding idea that works like a charm w/o knowing why for years, and finally a proof comes out which you can use to see/show why! #smartgridnerd 😁🤓
Concluding, DLR might be a cure for trX projects' delays & shut-downs, but requires granular weather forecasting/sensing, lots of conductor sensing, revisiting of standards & thorough planning! #smartgridnerd #energy #powersystems -15/15
It is SHOCKING to me that the interconnection seems to be lacking a 2ary (integral for my fellow nerds!) frequency control! How slow are the redispatching commands that a 2ary control seems to be conducted 'manually'? #smartgridnerd
Exactly my thoughts, too. I was telling @duncan__c privately that any aggregation of controllable resources (generators, DR, batteries, FACTS, etc) able to offer energy, power and/or services to the grid is a VPP. I think I'll go for a 🧵😅 #smartgridnerd
Lastly, reliability (at least in my field) is usually referred to as probability, which seems to have spilled over into resilience, too. Although the abstraction is universally understood, it offers little in system planning as (I think) you point out. #smartgridnerd 4/4
LCOE lacks system integration aspects (eg pressing marginal prices of 1/2 daily peaks) & fails to incentivize broad adoption. Not disliking it, just saying it serves a specific market segment/view. #smartgridnerd
Taking a break here (I teach) & will continue in about two hours! #smartgridnerd #energy #energytwitter 10/n
I had another 3-4 examples in mind, but I have to get back to work, so feel free to subtweet/reply & I'll continue my honorable rant... #smartgrid #smartgridnerd #energy #powersystems #electricity 9/9
Thankfully, the methods to control for grid stability are not (completely) unknown. Efforts like UNIFI & EFCC point to the right direction & certainly investments in more research & infrastructure will open the way further ahead... #smartgridnerd #smartgrid #powersystems 11/11
Next steps to seek collaboration w/ @forestservice & CA #utilities &/or @California_ISO. Hit me up folks, even though I'll come for you, too! #smartgridnerd #IoT #powersystems 8/8
In terms of electrical engineering "firm" means more that a resource is dispatchable/controllable rather than it is load following. Frequency & regulation reserves/control are load following. Firmness means you can follow (mostly) a timed schedule. #smartgridnerd

Utilities, ISOs, regulators, etc. usually come to the table w/ both a problem & a back-of-the-napkin solution, which they ask me to optimize for them. If it sounds peculiar/difficult, it is, but is also super rewarding to be chipping in in making the grid 'work'! 🤓#smartgridnerd
Broad grid awareness w/ sync'd measurements, real-time analytics & #DigitalTwin applications are a low-hanging fruit. Knowing your problems & where they are located in a system are the 1st step to solve them... #smartgridnerd -10/n
I must confess that in the past 5 years, R&D in my field seemed mundane & incremental. But if @Google & @Theteamatx dare us to dream to innovate so big & so wide, I foresee an utter transformation of historical proportions w/ maximum impact! #smartgridnerd #energytwitter -n/n

We were delighted (#smartgridnerd, @larissa_rmz, @SimranBhalla19, Parth, & Mark) to welcome @ElectrifyBloom & @kyrib for the last pitch of our work on what has been holding back #electrical #grid #transmission projects in the N. Americas. ---(1/n)
WOW! @russellgold (@wsj & SuperPower book amazon.com/Superpower-Que…) joined us to add his great insights on what helps & what is holding back #grid #transmission development in the US! Thanks, Russell! @SimranBhalla19, @larissa_rmz, Parth, Mark, @kyrib, @LizaBevin #smartgridnerd

Good morning from Virginia! #NASPI work group is meeting for the 30th time since its inception - I'll be live tweeting (#smartgridnerd tip: lunch breaks include trainings, so technically not breaks 🤣) #synchrophasor #pmu #stateestimation
