...when the hypothesis space is constrained, learners acquire strategies more slowly but generalize well to novel targets. When it is unconstrained, learners can quickly latch onto an expedient hypothesis—yet these strategies often fail to generalize.

Scarcity mindset really plagues the grown adults in the comments. Providing something your child would be interested is immediately translated into them asking for too much and they should be satisfied with the "basics" aka bare minimum that you barely bothered yourself to learn.

Don't let them silence you. Parents expecting you to be grateful for something you don't like is so weird to me. Children are allowed to be displeased

He’s right. My mother is illiterate, and my father only studied up to sixth grade. They’re from the Zahir Shah era, the period everyone romanticizes as “peaceful and prosperous.” Yet even then, education barely reached ordinary families. I earned my education in the United…

The desire to learn everything is admirable, but sometimes focusing deeply on a few things brings more growth than spreading yourself too thin. Could mastering less actually make your learning more meaningful and effective?

Learning is effortful, effortless learning largely a myth, you just passively learn something is unlikely to make you understand or be able to use what you learned. I would also emphasize Deliberate Practice is about skill acquisition not knowledge acquisition.

Last post about this! I promise! This is such a good read. I want to share it with you who are interested in learning. I have discovered this too before, that I should stop being an 'adult who knows better' and be a 'child who knows nothing' when I learn.

In my book, I framed this as the "language trap", the false belief that accessing things through language is a sufficient to understand them.

Any engagement which does not work from the very foundations and at the pace of the understanding of the learner will only add to confusion and misunderstanding. This is why debate and spaces and even passive lecture/presentation in and of itself, are all inadequate. This is due…

3️⃣ It said my learning style is “slow but deep.” I don’t memorize, I need to understand the roots. When a concept clicks, I break it down fully. But the process is slow, and yeah, it annoys me sometimes. Precision over speed 🧠

The elements on the left: more structure, shorter tasks, convergent goals, fewer resources, and stronger teacher direction align with what novice learners need. They do not yet have the mental models required to handle complex tasks or open inquiry without overloading working memory

2. Zero direction. You learn one random thing today, something unrelated tomorrow… and it never feels connected. 3. No one to guide you. It’s hard to move fast when you don’t even know what you’re supposed to be learning. 👇🏽

You’re right, it’s because they have had their minds dulled into passive learning since 5th grade. Up through 4th they are actively interested in learning , but it breaks down after that. I think part of the reason is having the same 1 or 2 teachers for multiple subjects. 1/2
