Why bother theorising context? I think this is a very important question for #tleap. Context can easily be overlooked / downplayed leading to simplifications / unfounded generalisations. But then, what theories of context can we use to avoid this?
I'll be a plenary speaker at this conference - no crystal ball but plenty of Bourdieu. If you are interested in submitting a paper for this conference on the future of language education in Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), Suzhou, Jiangsu, China see details #tleap

After 2 hours problematising academic writing features I asked students So what’s more important for academic writing? Having great ideas or looking professional? Quite a few still said ‘looking professional’ I disagree but I get why they think that #languageideologies #tleap

When marking reflective writing, I feel the number of criteria should be reduced at the expanse of the number of bands for providing detail, depth and thoughtful comments on own performance. Two main areas should stand out - performance and areas for improvement. #acwri #tleap
This ad automatically excludes folk who do not want to use AI in their practice because they don't consider it useful/ necessary for their subject. This means they have no right of refusal to use AI, scrapping any inclusivity that academia promotes #tleap #AI
I feel this is part of #academicintegrity Being considerate to how or whether you contribute to a conversation (for those participating) and making sure you clearly state the profile of participants you need (for researchers) #tleap
When diversifying for mixed level groups, I think authenticity of task should take precedence over authenticity of content. The task would give them procedural knowledge, which is a transferable skill. They can engage with more complex content outside of class too. #tleap

I’m always dismayed when academic English teachers push from the bottom up to impose top-down arbitrary writing requirements e.g. formatting, citation conventions, essay formats? Surely as EAP teachers we should at least be discussing/problematising these? #tleap @EapForSJ

I think first person student writing should follow genre specificities and disciplinary conventions. I'm thinking they could perhaps use 1st person when discussing their methodology in certain fields by way of expressing their voice as a researcher and decision maker #tleap

It is dead here. I have opened an account on Bluesky but not done much there. If we want #tleap discussions I doubt it will happen here (never mind the ethics of X) and we might want to think about setting up a space elsewhere collectively. At the moment its very fragmented
Despite only tweeting and liking the niche topic of #tleap my timeline on this app shows me anything but... Where can online discussions happen now? Linkedin? BALEAP mailing list? Mastodon? Missed this at the time but reposting as it's a good question with good thread so far.
@AL_BALEAP and other #tleap colleagues - what would you say are the major contributions of Ac Lits to EAP? and conversely, what are the contributions of EAP to Ac Lits (if any)?
Needs analysis is associated with practical pedgogical outcomes: designing / evaluating a course. Could it also be used for social critique? Even Benesch's work was about working within existing educational systems, rather than as a study of the education system itself. #tleap

I also found the "oracy as competence" vs "oracy for learning" (discipline specific) interesting. It seems one should precede, or be a prerequisite, for the other in the case of international EAP students. Or should it? #tleap
