The Melbourne Institute study monitored 328 families over five years & also found no long term effect to parent or child. By contrast, we know that tiredness affects memory consolidation, behaviour, concentration, appetite, our immune system, couple’s relationships & mental health

Thank god for this! Too many new parents are overly - anxious about their babies crying while learning to self-soothe. This isn't leaving babies to scream for hours. It's normal for some babies to cry sometimes while nodding off. No more guilt. mol.im/a/8097977 @MailOnline

Letting babies 'cry out' at night helps to soothe them, study finds

Researchers at the University of Warwick tracked 178 babies and their mothers over the children's first year and a half to find that letting them cry at night causes no real problems.

We see exhausted, tearful parents on a weekly basis, worrying about being judged by other parents for choosing to help their children to sleep soundly. The function of sleep is that it’s restorative and is so important for any family to function well.

It's really bad. I see new mums exhausted and anxious because they've "read in books" that crying damages their babies brains. My heart breaks for them. They're just trying their best. But we need to empower them that it's OK if babies are fed, dry and well, they will still cry.

‘Infants occasionally left to cry by their parents, instead of being immediately picked up and comforted, cry for slightly shorter periods by the age of 18 months, according to a study. And its major finding is that encouraging babies to self-soothe probably does them no harm.’
