Creating a game is not just art and code. Playing games from the same genre contributes a lot to the game design process. What tower defense, rimworld like, roguelite, roguelike games do you recommend?

I'm also making these posts over at Bluesky, in case you prefer to follow me over there! bsky.app/profile/bitwis…

Posting a screenshot everyday* until my first Godot game is ready for launch #gamedev Day 3: Spawning some skeletons. I'm thinking RTS, Tower Defense and Strategy. Part of the fun is figuring things out as we go

The asset bundles by @Snoblinart on @itchio look amazing. I might need to adapt them a bit for my project though #gamedev #pixelart

If you had to pick between these two, what would be your preferred genre?

Simulation (eg. RimWorld) %40
Tower Defense %60

I consider myself an experienced programmer, but my skill level in everything art related is awful at best. Are there any good resources on how to start with 2D art? Probably pixel art would be the most accessible?

PSA to any future devs in the learning stage: This is an attempt to lock you into being AI dependent. That is the path to being replaceable. Don’t fall for it.

Creating your game with SDL, and every lib/helper it comes with, will eventually lead you to making your own engine. Just replace piece by piece with your own code and suddenly you have a cross platform DirectX + Vulkan renderer

As a backend dev, @sveltejs is a breath of fresh air whenever I need to do some frontend. If you’re curious, I recommend watching @tsoding‘s first time using it! youtu.be/M2X-t7d8g9s

There’s no after. A true 10x engineer is not one in their own eyes. A 10x engineer is someone who constantly learns new concepts and never slacks, with the intention of becoming the best they can be, even if they already are the best.

Serious question. What’s the goal after becoming a 10x engineer?

I find myself building backends with the C# .NET stack, solely because of Entity Framework. What are the cons that could push me over to different tech (Go, Node.js, etc)?

Simple games in C++ with SDL? Been there, done that ✅ UE5? Now that's a new challenge. Drop a follow if you want to join the experience. Keeping blueprints to a minimum

Let's give UE5 a shot. Devlog session 0. Creating a super basic party game, not at all inspired by that blue-collar worker with a hat who throws a party on a board. Accepting name suggestions, especially the fun ones.
