Feeling useful is not as important as people's lives. This is a situation where doing the wrong thing is worse than doing nothing at all. Imagine a hypothetical hackathon app for diagnosing COVID that sends people with the flu to the ER, causing backlogs for actual infections.
How are medical experts “forced” to review any independently produced development projects?
Medical experts are forced to take time away from important work to critique and correct well-intentioned but ultimately useless data sorties from people who don't know enough to be meddling in the field.
Where is the evidence that people spending their own time is actually making the situation worse? Also the time they spend working on a solution that can be transferred to another more useful domain space has a tremendous value and impact.
