“I can fight as well as any man.” Felicia Mary Browne, English artist and communist, was killed in action near Tardienta, Spain #OnThisDay 1936 while attempting to dynamite a Nationalist munitions train. Browne was the first British volunteer to die in the Spanish Civil War.

John Baxter, writer and silversmith, was born #OnThisDay 1756. Briefly chairman of the pro-reform London Corresponding Society, Baxter was one of the radicals indicted during the 1794 Treason Trials, which aimed to cripple the British radical movement.
