Lots of new homes in the urban core. Fantastic. This is exactly where we should be building lots of new housing. But now there's a clear need for better public transit. Bus lanes and BRT can help, but long term I dream of a North Park/Hillcrest/Bankers Hill trolley or subway.

Freeway in LA falls apart, Governor @GavinNewsom flies down to SoCal, declares state of emergency, and gets it fast-tracked for repairs in a matter of weeks. Where is that leadership when it comes to the second busiest rail corridor in the country?

To all the guys (it’s entirely guys) angrily claiming this bill is an attack on their freedom: Recklessly speeding is illegal. You aren’t “free” to break the law.

Wow. Carmakers will hate this, but I think it's great: A new California bill from @Scott_Wiener would require all new cars to contain speed governors that prevent them from going 10 mph+ over the speed limit. sfchronicle.com/bayarea/articl…

At DTLA Regional Connector stations “Metro widened streets that were supposed to be narrowed or left the same width. On Wilshire, city plans mandate the street should be narrowed and the sidewalks widened. But…Metro is restoring prior roadway widths.” la.streetsblog.org/2024/01/25/at-…

This shows how uphill the battle for safe streets really is, when police are stolid defenders of the status quo, which in this case is "privilege of drivers over rights of non-car people". It's also why design changes and automated systems are needed, not police discernment.

In a similar vein, Atlanta replaced Union Station with a parking deck. That's how batsh*t crazy we went for cars in America. And that's how dire the need is to put a laser focus on retrofitting truly great urbanism into cities whenever we can.

America loved highways so much that they put an elevated highway mere feet away from a gorgeous train station.
