NYC's closed primaries disproportionately harm immigrants & young voters. This is because new voters are often unfamiliar with the two-party system and register as independents, not realizing this prevents them from participating in primaries. All voters deserve an equal voice.
The vast majority of elections in NYC — from City Council, to Congress, to the Mayor — are decided in low-turnout closed primaries. As a result, most of our elected leaders are chosen by only 10%-20% of voters. This is one of many problems we seek to fix with Final Five Voting.
