Our new study uses data on more than 230,000 NYC students to examine the effects of neighborhood policing on high school graduation rates. We found that while the overall level of policing fell over time, racial disparities persisted. Read the brief: bit.ly/3dKG3gA

It seems very clear that we need a massive, massive climate movement if we want to have any chance of avoiding complete catastrophe.
It seems to make more sense for policymakers to be focused on banning racism in schools INSTEAD OF banning critical race theory in schools...but that’s how white supremacy works. #CRT #raciallyjustschools #txlege #CRTinschools #CriticalRaceTheory
Proud to announce my manuscript, co-authored with Clare Buckley Flack, Katharine Parham and Priscilla Wohlstetter on equity and CTE is published in RER! @CBFlack, @katie_parham, @Wohlstetter8, @AERA_EdResearch, @thealexlist, @CurranDowd, @PKarenMurphy
An RER analysis finds that few career and technical education (CTE) studies disaggregate outcome measures by student subgroups to better assess equity. It also finds that a dearth of large-scale, comparative & longitudinal research limits generalizability. journals.sagepub.com/stoken/default…
Big week in personal pubs over here! Delighted to see this paper, co-authored with @ElisabethKim19 @CBFlack and @Wohlstetter8 is published and available online now in RER! 🎉

Let’s be clear: this harm to Black (& other dark-skinned) patients results from a medical technology that uses light skin as the human standard. It’s also racist to “correct” for race by treating Black people as a biologically distinct group (eg, eGFR). We need to end both.
Must read. “Black patients had ~3x more hypoxemia that was not detected by pulse oximetry as White patients. ...reliance on pulse oximetry to triage patients and adjust supplemental oxygen levels may place Black patients at ⬆️ risk for hypoxemia.” Link: nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
Together, we will build a world where the accomplishments of our daughters will be celebrated, rather than diminished.
This is what happens when @NYCSchools decides that an open window constitutes adequate ventilation. This is not sustainable.
Snow.....coming into the classroom. My feet are starting to freeze.
This piece has influenced my current work (under review) in really helpful ways. I was excited to add it to my syllabus!
Snow.....coming into the classroom. My feet are starting to freeze.
Just finished a draft syllabus for the course I am teaching this spring! As will all things teaching, it was deeply interesting and took way longer than expected. This will be my first time as the instructor of record for a graduate course. Honored by this opportunity @EPSAatTC

There are 1,100,000 students in NYC schools. Yet our schools only have: 1,335 Social Workers 2,958 Guidance Counselors 560 School Psychologists We have more School Safety Agents (5,500) than Guidance Counselors, Social Workers, and School Psychologists combined.
Putting this on my reading list

Today I used the straps I keep to jam my classroom doors in case of an active shooter as a measuring tape to space out student seats to prevent the spread of a deadly viral pandemic. This is what it is to be an American teacher.
