Sunny but very windy in suburban Derbados this morning, but not enough to deter this hardy, battle-scarred Red Admiral from finding a sheltered spot on a neighbour's front garden to feed @MatthewOates76 This shrub version of strawberry tree attracting plenty of bees too.

Another glorious early autumn day here in "Derbados" and a few butterflies still visiting the buddleias, which still have some flowers thanks to my deadheading activities. This Painted Lady was one of two here yesterday - we usually only see singletons.

I knew there was a reason why I've not done anything with the pile of surplus gravel on part of the front garden. #findtheLady

Probably the most ragged Red Admiral I've ever seen on late flowering self-set buddleia just now. It was around last week so has survived the last three days of miserable weather. #tough

Not much sun and very few butterflies in the garden this afternoon but this fearsome looking fly caught my eye - Novickia ferox, Fat-palped Tachina apparently. Another species heading north it seems.

Two of four newly hatched Comma caterpillars on nettles in the back garden. Thought hatching was imminent when I checked eggs yesterday.

Sand Martins on the road in France. They roll around along our lane every year during autumn migration. Is this common behaviour? Why do they do it? It's above 30C, the roads are sticky, are they oiling their wings? Deterring ticks etc? Anyone know!? @ianballam

Mid November drop in to JCB Rocester Staffs and the ornamental lake has been restocked with a variety of drake ducks All seem fully winged and no obvious rings Some of these probably appearing at a lake in the Midlands in the near future

I spoke to my mother on Facetime this evening. She said: 'It shows the royal family are as fucked up as every other family." I'm in shock: I didn't think our family was fucked up.

Red Admiral a big surprise whilst birdwatching this morning. Can't recall a year when I've seen Red Admiral before Peacock and Brimstone. What about you @MatthewOates76 ? #Derbados
