Bible Commentator | 1662 - 1714

There is nothing in this world we are born to, and can truly call our own, but sin and trouble.

The Father begins, the Son manages, and the Holy Spirit works and perfects all.

Jesus Christ is the best clothing for Christians to adorn themselves with, to arm themselves with.

A Christian may reckon himself undressed if he be unarmed.

Our walk is true, our converse right, when according to the word of God.

Those who have but little, if they have a heart to be therewith content,& to enjoy the comfort of that little,it is enough;it is all riches.

Those that make the world their God idolize those that have most of its good things & seek their favour as if they were Heaven's favourites.

God's justice cannot be out-witted.

Spiritual joy is seated in the soul; the joy of the hypocrite is but from the teeth outward.

Sometimes the onlyway we have of reproving wicked discourse &witnessing against it is by leaving the company&going out of the hearing of it.

Where there is pride in the heart and no wisdom in the head to suppress it, it commonly shows itself in the words.

He that would be himself wise must walk with those that are so, must choose such for his intimate acquaintance.

Never let those expect any thing truly sweet to their souls that will not be persuaded to leave their sins.

It is folly to be rash, as the fool is, who is forward to talk of things he knows nothing of and undertake that which he is no way fit for.

The service of sin is perfect slavery.

Where grace reigns sin is loathsome.

We are all concerned to possess ourselves with a dread and detestation of the sin of lying and with a reigning principle of honesty.

Matthew Henry reposted

Christian, beware of thinking lightly of sin. Take heed in case you fall little by little - Spurgeon

It is men's wisdom to mind their business and follow an honest calling, for that is the way, by the blessing of God, to get a livelihood.

Right thoughts are a righteous man's best evidences, as nothing more certainly proves a man wicked than wicked contrivances and designs.
