Extremely underrated engineering legend—self-taught, too. Surprised at how little he’s talked about.
FSD saves lives. It happened to me tonight. Going through New Mexico from the Tesla Shareholders' meeting, the head-on collision (75 mph) with oncoming traffic was averted. Just a broken mirror, busted window, and a bit of a shaken mind. Thank you Elon, thank you Tesla, thank…
True enough. I got into manufacturing because I wanted to buy fabricated metal parts and couldn't get the time of day from legacy shops. I wasn't trying to maximize financial returns, I was trying to solve a problem. Turns out, OSH Cut has great returns in spite of being capex…
Capital light vs capital heavy businesses:
No rhetoric is as radicalizing as beauty, except the stark absence thereof.
My mother bought this garlic press from the Elizabeth David shop in Pimlico in the mid sixties. Not only is it still going but it’s the only one I’ve ever found that properly works: all the garlic comes out, no faff. It’s my number one thing to inherit
Okay but it looks mad cuter now, leave them
The Romans built the Pantheon out of concrete in 126 A.D. and it still looks like new. Modern concrete is inferior.
Classic example of the ticking time bomb that is concrete and steel rebar.
Most people spend a decade overthinking those first 20 hours — stuck in research mode, waiting for confidence to magically appear. Perfectionism is just procrastination dressed as preparation. The first 20 hours teach you more than the next 200. But only if you start them.
You can get competent at nearly anything in 20 hours. The problem is most people spend a decade delaying the first 20 hours.
America’s Shenzhen will be built here.
Is there any place geographically you could see the United States building a new major city/metro?
Are American Homes even built to last 50 years?
In honor of a nerdy wordcel post going viral, let's compare the street experience of high-rise versus low-rise density. Left is 111 W 57th street (the pencil tower) and right is the MacDougal–Sullivan Gardens Historic District (closest blocks that the Village has to courtyard…
If anyone is interested in understanding why so many people dislike super-tall luxury towers, you can read this publicly available paper on the topic written by Dr. Kheir Al-Kodman (Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Illinois Chicago). The paper argues that while…
Fixing downtown Dallas would actually be the easiest thing ever because the parking lots are calling out for mixed-use courtyard blocks
Explored Dallas today for potential move. What that city did to their downtown should be outlawed nation wide. I have never seen a more desolate, boring, and pathetic downtown of a major US city in my life. Now uptown on the other hand, that’s a good start.
Pretty good list. Many, in fact, see Dallas replacing Chicago as capital of the Midwest/Mid-America. Dallas is inward-facing, while Houston is an outward-facing international hub. Galveston-Houston (and even Austin) was still sort of Deep South 50 years ago, not much left now.
After exploring Texas my nearly 8 years here, this is how I would describe each city of you were to move Dallas: Midwest Austin: Cali San Antonio: Mexico Houston: Deep South
Nothing makes me happier than knowing overalls are coming back into style.
Currently having my mind blown by the urbanism, vibrancy, and walkability of downtown Greenville, South Carolina. I have never seen this many people walking around a small American city in my life.
six months ago, the city threatened to charge me with a misdemeanor if I didn't remove this bench. I put the bench out because it's at the top of a very steep hill; dozens of people rest here every day. the original bench was seized but I now have a permit and new bench. 🥳
1 month later, I’ve finished the introduction
The French & Spanish Revival buildings of WeHo set against the backdrop of the hills and all the palm trees combine to make L.A. one of the best atmospheres in the country, maybe the world. But, these beautiful buildings are all 100+ years old. Nothing beautiful like them has…
