Is allowing MAID for patients experiencing mental (rather than physical) illness extending the parameters of this legislation too far?
As a society, we have always supported people with mental illness reassuring them that suicide is a permanent fix to a temporary problem. It seems we have lost sight of that. Is this the beginning of a slippery slope?
Hospice Foundation of America provides palliative care options aimed to improve the quality of life of patients and families who face life-threatening illnesses. Bereavement counseling is also available for family members up to 13 months after the death of their loved one. 🔴

Only ~1/3 of requests for lethal drugs are made for pain reasons. Instead, there is a higher concern for loss of autonomy, control of bodily functions and ability to participate in fun activities. Suffering takes both mental and physical forms 🟢
Bryan Pilkington, a Catholic theologian, argues that the dying need to be offered deference not deferment. He states that it is important to be able to tell the dying they are valued no matter their physical state. This captures the damaging message PAD can send.

Death with dignity: One family's story
In an article, The Linacre Quarterly states "The ethos of the medical profession is built around the obligation to maintain and protect human life." Death with Dignity laws refute the idea that doctors must protect human life. Agree or disagree?
