Has AMOC run amok? Yikes!

New Danish study just out in Nature Communications, titled "Warning of a forthcoming collapse of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation". Is it serious? Here's my take on it: buff.ly/3O95c2M

New paper: The living piñon🌲in this photo (left) has tolerated drought treatment for 13 years (!). While a reasonable question is "why would you do this to that poor tree?" We asked: "how is this tree still alive?" Old reserves may be one answer. nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/np…

What are the main takeaways? 1. Growth doesn’t always stop before photosynthesis 2. NSC does not increase when growth is limited by drought 3. Growth and photosynthesis are independent processes both regulated by water availability.

Do we also see this disconnect in our data? I used a PCA to project the full dataset onto a linear sub space. Basically, if the angle between photosynthesis and growth is 0, that would imply perfect correlation! As the angle approaches 90 degrees, the vectors are independent.

Congratulations to @ecofiz1 on publication of 1st PhD chapter in Nature Communications! Levels of knowledge: 1) photosynthesis drives growth, 2)environment limits growth > photosynthesis, 3) both growth and photosynthesis are co-limited. We go to #3! doi.org/10.1038/s41467…

News coverage of our in-review work on timing and causes of western redcedar dieback. If only reviewers would take as much interest in the paper as the press is - maybe we could get it published! @ArjanMeddens @lrpoutside @CinquiniTrees & others columbiainsight.org/new-study-soun…

I asked ChatGPT about #whatkillstrees. It did pretty well. Clearly its plugged into the literature. The future is wild and a bit frightening....and should I by thinking more about ROS in my work?

Oh Snap!

How popular claims about common mycorrhizal networks in forests are disconnected from evidence. Thx to M. Jones & J. Hoeksema @jhooooks for their friendship, brilliance, and integrity. I would not have had the courage to tackle this issue without them. nature.com/articles/s4155…

When I hear back on submitted proposals, especially from NSF, I expect to be rejected. I am surprised when they are funded. Today I was not surprised. So that panel better not be surprised to see that proposal again in a few months!

An awesome story on how forest restoration in Australia might prevent the next lethal pandemic (in humans). npr.org/sections/goats…

Pro-tip: When applying for faculty jobs, please address the criteria in the job description! So if it says global change, be sure to relate your work to that. Otherwise you will be cut from the search, even if you have an impressive CV.
