In Asia, the United States is long on attitude, short on strategy. In this podcast deep dive into America's gathering policy failures in Asia, I pull the thread on several themes: 1. America's oversecuritization of its approach to Asia - to borrow the same metaphor, Washington…

I just want to emphasize: This is not normal. This is unprecedented. And it is chaos. This morning my colleagues -- who are working quite hard -- reported that the White House had decimated CDC offices related to injury prevention, respiratory disease surveillance, and chronic…

I still can't get over that Trump actually complained yesterday abt China sending threatening letters to countries around the world. Yes, how DARE they do something so brazen and unprecedented!

85% of the commentary about Chicago on here is from people who have pretty clearly never spent any time there.

Just a note if you’re covering news in Chicago from outside of Chicago. Nobody uses the phrase “Windy City native” or anything like that. I mean I guess there’s “Windy City Live,” but other than that nobody in Chicago uses the phrase “Windy City.”

This, folks, pretty much sums up our current moment. Enjoy the era of American juche!

We want all Supply Chains back in USA. Allies are worse than China anyway. Allies are taking advantage of America.

Just look at this dystopian hellscape ... my god.

Tomorrow is the Chicago Marathon. Good luck to all the runners this weekend.

Brutal and accurate assessment from a Congressman and retired Air Force one-star:

This makes my blood boil. The top spot at Cyber Command and the top two spots at National Security Agency have been vacant for over six months. Infighting and incompetence. Haugh and Hartman are both great leaders and deserved better. This is unacceptable. therecord.media/william-hartma…

That would be the same allies we are busily smacking with tariffs and other coercive measures.

China is highlighting exactly why we need to diversify supply chains towards allies…

Arithmetic is not a strong suit for at least some folks in the administration.

A 650% savings means I get the drugs for free at the first 100% discount and then I get to pocket an additional 550% of whatever the original costs. Really? And the White House wants to upend and dismantle the Department of Education! The world is laughing at us — and not just…

This piece is speculative because it's not clear how these controls will play out in practice. But it is certainly conceivable that the United States blew up its relationship with India, tanking 25 years of trust-building with New Delhi, to snuggle up to Pakistan while presuming…

It's a good thing diseases no longer exist ... soon we can go back to leeches and bleeding. You know, we can debate public policies - economic policy, foreign policy, spending and priorities - and it's fair game to argue about whether the United States should be giving foreign…

It’s really bad. The entire OD at NCIRD and GHC were RIFd. MMWR, CDC library, the EIS classes from 2023 & 2024, parts of chronic diseases, CFA, OSSAM, PHIC, OPHDST, OHR, NIOSH, and OS, and the entire DC office are all gone. It’s appalling & it’s going to kill people globally.

Pot kettle ... in which the world champion of economic coercion calls out a country that, yes, ALSO likes to use economic coercion ... I've been writing on Chinese economic coercion for a long time, so this isn't exactly a revelation, but the hypocrisy is awfully strong here and…

China is attempting to use economic coercion to influence American politics. The United States is working with other Asian nations to secure new market access for American exporters, protecting our supply chains and advancing the interests of the American people.

Probably not too far off.

As far as I can tell here is what happened. [some of conversation I imagined] The US Commerce Dept widened export controls of its technologies to a wider set of Chinese companies (all the subsidiaries of sanctioned Chinese cos with 50%+ interests) and started charging Chinese…

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the CDC is being eviscerated right now. America is not going to have any kind of outbreak response capacity after tonight. Americans’ health data is no longer secure. Say goodbye to federal public health in any capacity.

I gotta admit, blocking Chinese imports bc China blocked its exports is some next-level-gonzo tariff policy. Kudos to the president for once again exceeding my expectations.

Japanese politics took several unexpected turns, with Takaichi Sanae winning the LDP presidency and the Komeito leaving its coalition with the LDP. Here's my @CarnegieEndow piece (that had to course-correct quickly to get it out before the long weekend). carnegieendowment.org/research/2025/…

Been saying for months that the “warming” so many people were hyped up about was illusory … the fact is, the President is like alternate side of the street parking in New York City - three days a week he’s on one side, three days a week he can be on the other side. U.S. policy…
