Just because someone knows a few basic details about you, it doesn’t mean they are genuine. The police or your bank will never contact you out of the blue to ask for your PIN, password, or to transfer money to another account.

Yet another example of a company placing too much reliance on a single employee, and having insufficient financial controls in place. If you are concerned about the integrity of your businesses systems, Ensors can assist by providing an internal audit. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northe…

Cookstown firm victim of £1.9m 'meticulous and premeditated' fraud

The boss at a building supplier in Cookstown says the firm was hit hard by the crime.

“Whenever you are making a payment to a supplier...you should be highly suspicious of any change in account details or new instructions. Always check with a trusted known contact, and if you have any doubt do not transfer the money.”

⚠️ House buyers and businesses warned of payment diversion fraud. In the year to September 2021, we have received 4,600 reports of cases, with individual losses averaging around £30,000. actionfraud.police.uk/news/house-buy… #PaymentDiversionFraud

This is very good advice and applies particularly to an organisation like HMRC, especially if it's a call that you weren't expecting.

Quick tip to avoid scams: Unsure about a caller? Hang up and call the organisation back using a trusted number, such as the one on the back of your card if calling your bank. Criminals spoof numbers, making it look like they’re calling from a trusted number.

It’s important to be aware of scams at work as well as at home. How to spot invoice and mandate scams: 🚨 A request comes out of the blue to change the bank details of an existing supplier 🚨 You receive more frequent than usual or duplicate invoices for a product or service

An interesting look into one of the most infamous frauds and accounting scandals of recent times. It is unfortunately still a relevant case study to this day, although, as discussed in the article, audit reform could be just around the corner bbc.co.uk/news/business-… via @BBCNews

Whilst more than 6000 reports of COVID related fraud have been recorded, how many more are unreported or as yet to be detected? Companies should also consider what new risks they need to control, especially with the new ways in which many organisations now have to operate.

As we always advise our clients, if you ever receive an unexpected or unusual call from HMRC do not respond or give away any personal information without double checking first. If you are unsure, check with your accountant, or call HMRC directly using a known telephone number.

We are aware of scammers phoning people, telling them about a ‘fraud case’ in their name and threatening arrest. Do not respond, this is a SCAM. Report scams on GOV.UK 👇 gov.uk/government/org…
