Saturday Playtime Found these skulls tucked away in some crates. #Saurophaganax (conjectural) #Torvosaurus “old school” #Allosaurus CLDQ composites Neat directionally-correct size comparison. Look for Scaled loved and Full-size offerings late 2024 :-)! #FossilCrates

#Cyamodus hildegardis 2 skeletons of a Middle Triassic (245-235 mya) #placodont from Monte San Giorgio (Besano Formation), Switzerland @ Natural History Museum, U. of Zurich. Drs. Dennis Hansen (speaking) and Robert McCord say, “Everything wants to be a turtle!” #FossilCrates

#Plateosaurus life resto and the original skeleton twas based off of at the Natural History Museum at the University of Zurich in Switzerland. Amazing specimens (this one, Big Al Two, Victoria…) and fantastic displays make this place an awesome visit! #FossilCrates

#Argovisaurus (PIMUZ A/III 5279) eyes are enormous! Miedema et al. 2024 give it “an orbital length around 250 mm”, or ~10”. The 3D-printed skull was made directly from the “blown apart” skull found with the block of vertebrae, limbs, and ribs. #FossilCrates

Big Al Two, Allosaurus jimmadseni, from the Late Jurassic Howe Quarry in Wyoming. This is the best Allo preserved, from head to tail tis spectacular. No Allo has anywhere near as nice of a tail, replete with chevrons even! Injuries abound. Many tales in this one! #FossilCrates

Just in time for the Holidays! “So You Know Tyrannosaurus rex? 27 Dinosaurs you likely didn’t know from Adratiklit to Zby” is a delightful compendium of lesser-known, but not less fascinating, dinosaurs from around the world. Buy at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, + #FossilCrates

A new Montana tyrannosaur, Sir William, hasn’t received a deep-dive study yet. Suggested to be a Teratophoneus, cranial differences suggest otherwise. Not Bistahieversor, either. Part of the “Cowboy Tyrannosaur” clade? Cast at Anticus, a Scottsdale, AZ art gallery. #FossilCrates

Sold for $4,350,000 (Before fees at Phillips Auction) The #Triceratops dubbed Cera was, according to a histology study, 2-6 years old. I call it “fun sized” as tis quite a bit smaller than the normal ceratopsian one sees on display. #FossilCrates

Nanosaurus “tiny lizard” Marsh 1877 From Wyoming’s Howe-Stephen’s Quarry, Late #Jurassic Morrison Formation ~150 mya Tis the most complete discovered, surpassing Jensen’s 1963 find =s #Drinker #Hallopus #Laosaurus #Nanosaurus #Othniela #Othnielosaurus or does it? #FossilCrates

Meet #Argovisaurus Miedema et al. 2024. The Middle Jurassic Swiss holotype (PIMUZ A/III 5279) bones (and 3D skull cast) are at the Natural History Museum at the U. of Zurich. ~18’ long, w/ a 10” eye orbit, y 4’ jaw, makes for an incredible 10 Tons life restoration. #FossilCrates

Araucaria delevoryasii, a tree excavated at the Howe-Stephens Quarry. Legendary for its dinosaur preservation it produced this new species. You can see it on the Big Al Two quarry map. Plants are rarely preserved with dinosaurs, making this even more remarkable! #FossilCrates

Kaiju Showdown! I *love* this exhibit! Dr. Dennis Hansen and team at the Natural History Museum at the University of Zurich upscaled ~18x an Eurasian magpie (Pica pica) making acetabulum height equal #Allosaurus jimmadseni, “Big Al Two.” Amazing to compare bones! #FossilCrates

Happy Halloween from #FossilCrates! Treat? #Nanotyrannus shown again to NOT be a teenage #Tyrannosaurus! Trick? Two species! “Jane” now N. lethaeus, I didn’t see that coming! Scanning Nano w/ @JGN_Paleo y @WitmerLab. Overheating. Power outage. Camaraderie 🤣🔥! #FossilFriday

TWO SPECIES of Nanotyrannus? N. lethaeus, holotype “Jane,” BMRP 2002.4.1, tis the heavier species. “Warhammer” (NCSM 40000, aka 40k), the Dueling Dinosaurs Nano, is assigned to N. lancensis by Zanno y Napoli 2025. No more “Nonotyrannus”… Nano lives! #FossilCrates

Kevin is the best! Tremendous knowledge with nigh infinite patience, and always willing to share. Congrats, Kevin, well deserved!!!! Thanks for sharing, Jim!

Kevin Bylund wins the very deserved Strimple Award for scientific contributions by an amateur from the Paleontological Society at the Annual Geological Society of America meeting. He is Utah's top cephalopod biostratigraphy expert! @BLMUtah @utahgeological @UUtah @NHMU

I made a YT video on the Fossil Crates channel about the new Sereno et al. 2025 mummy paper: youtu.be/ejBCj8SgRcQ?si… Tis a review of the different sections, excluding the geochemistry section :-). I am eager to hear about the Tyrannosaurus mummy! #FossilCrates

#Plateosaurus cast of an articulated Late Triassic Frick Quarry dino, at the Natural History Museum at the University of Zurich. Dr. Dennis Hansen explains the gnarled mass is a terribly damaged shoulder. Survival suggests these animals could exist being bipedal. #FossilCrates
