Fantastic session on Mpox epidemiology, genomics and vaccines at the ISV vaccine meeting in Cape Town. Looking forward to meeting old and new collaborators for our work on Mpox vaccine responses in immune suppressed adults @hkjcghi @MedCambridge @IHVNigeria @DrAdamAbdullahi
It was a pleasure and honour to deliver my first lecture as co-director of @hkjcghi recently - link to the talks below. Really thrilled by the collective momentum behind our mission to prevent and contain pandemics and a huge thank you to our funders for making this possible

This is amazing - a periodic table showing every element and how it’s used. Chemistry really is everywhere. 🔬✨ What’s your favorite element?
Exciting milestone for the @HKJC_Racing Global Health Institute 👏 Co-led by our @GuptaR_lab, the new joint lab at @hkumed will advance vaccine research and deepen collaboration across continents, strengthening our shared commitment to global health innovation. Read more👇
A major step for global health innovation! The Hong Kong Jockey Club Global Health Institute, a partnership between @HKUniversity, @Cambridge_Uni, and @IVIHeadquarters, was officially inaugurated with a plaque-unveiling ceremony at @hkumed 🔗 hkjcghi.org/hkjcghi-plaque…
Incredibly proud to see the opening of @hkjcghi laboratory at @hkumed where @MedCambridge scientists will work alongside HKU colleagues to design and test vaccines for global preparedness efforts. We were privileged to have an array of high profile speakers to launch the event
There's a new BA.3.2.2 from South Africa today. For the most part, there's been little substantial change in BA.3.2 over the past few months—mostly synonymous mutations & very little happening in spike. But this new one has 3 spike mutations & looks quite interesting. 1/7
PSA: Stop calling macrophages in tissue M1 or M2. These are not states that exist in biology. The only use of M1 is a macrophage cultured ex vivo with LPS and IFNg; and for M2: IL-4/13/10. Macrophages in tissues are highly complex and diverse and do not resemble either of the…
@GuptaR_lab & @yunlong_cao previously showed that for JN.1, heparan sulfate is crucial for infectivity—in contrast to other variants, for which it tended to lower infectivity—so I definitely think HS is important But the claims made here seem extreme &... x.com/LongDesertTrai…
Partly, this may have been due to an increased ability to utilize cell-surface heparan sulfate as a co-receptor, as @yunlong_cao & @GuptaR_lab showed in a fascinating paper. 57/64 x.com/GuptaR_lab/sta…

Thanks @GuptaR_lab @MedCambridge. Providing some additional commentary. 1. Delighted to share our study on fractional COVID-19 vaccine dosing in 🇳🇬. One big challenge during the pandemic was vaccine shortages. Could smaller doses help extend supplies without losing protection?
Pleased to share work from a large collaborative effort showing that fractional doses of COVID-19 vaccine elicit comparable neutralising antibody responses to variants of concern as full dose vaccine in the west African setting. nature.com/articles/s4159…
New work from our long-term collab with @GuptaR_lab from @Cambridge_Uni! His lab's awesome work, with our protein dynamics input, reveals how Spike P812S (fusion peptide) enables antibody escape by inducing protein instability @jesucastin @IGIBSocial sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Our work on responses to COVID-19 vaccine in vulnerable populations continues. Here we show older individuals generate a lower non neutralising antibody response (ADCC) post dose 6 that correlates with lower levels of IgG1 -known to primarily mediate ADCC. nature.com/articles/s4154…
