Our choirs (PS 315K here) learned “Follow the Drinking Gourd” this Black History Month. This song is about the escape north by African-American slaves prior to the Civil War. The Drinking Gourd is another name for the Big Dipper, which helped guide enslaved people towards freedom

Tune in tomorrow, Tues 2/28, during the 9am hour of NBC's Today Show, to see the Harmony Program! The segment will feature our Board member and NY Philharmonic Principal Clarinetist, Anthony McGill, as well as students from our Manhattan Youth Orchestra and PS 315 in Brooklyn.

Starting with the fundamentals, and this week's lesson is on rhythm. Learning rhythm through clapping helps solidify the beat in your body without having to worry about the other technical aspects learned in music making.

Our third #NationalMentorMonth highlight goes to Dr. Leandro Gazineo. His resume and background speaks for itself, and we're thankful that our students and teachers get to learn from him each week! To learn more about Leandro, visit: harmonyprogram.org/bio/leandro-ga…

Introducing our first Harmony Program Youth Orchestra: Manhattan. This weekend we launched our new orchestra, and the excitement and energy from our students and families was amazing. We can't wait to see what this group accomplishes over the next year!

This week's highlight is Veronica Riner who has been with us since 2019. We keep Veronica busy, not only does she teach in the classroom, but she coaches our All Stars and our Youth orchestra, and teaches privately. To learn more about Veronica, visit: bit.ly/3QdImrc

Finishing off our Top 10 moments of 2022, and coming in at #1 is our growth! We tripled our student population in 2022, reaching children in early grades and providing instruction during the school day, afterschool and online. We can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store!

Coming in at #2 (and a very close second to #1) is Harmony Program in the news! We’ve been very fortunate this year to be featured on NY1, NBC 4, PIX11 and the New York Social Diary. If you haven’t had a chance to check them out yet, visit our website and click on the news links.

Our # 3 spot is goes to our 2022-2023 All Stars Orchestra! This group has been practicing two hours a week since October, and their winter concert two weeks highlighted their musical growth and development. We can't wait to hear them again in the spring!

It takes a village to be able to support the growth of our student musicians, which is why our #4 spot goes to our cultural and music industry partners. We could not do our work without your support and collaboration!
