"You can’t make an economy thrive by throwing rocks through windows, regardless of what the glazier might like you to believe. Likewise, you can’t expand women’s economic opportunities by dropping bombs on Berlin, regardless of what Uncle Sam might like you to believe" —@jmelemke

Rosie the Riveter is a misleading symbol of women’s lib… actual reform in gender norms requires us to get better at relating as equals, not following orders in a wartime hierarchy. Read more and why it still matters here! oll.libertyfund.org/publications/l…

"Our job as teachers is to [...] demonstrate to each generation how the tools of economic reasoning can be indispensable aids in unleashing their curiosity." —@PeterBoettke via @Econlib

In her contributions to Women at War, @jmelemke challenges the idea that war advances women’s freedom. From WWII propaganda to modern conflicts, she argues that while war may shift opportunities, it strengthens hierarchy, not equality. loom.ly/M8eOe7I

Once again the attempt to protect women actually destroys their livelihoods: "reduction in demand [from the export ban] has led to a collapse in the price of shea nuts, which in turn has meant that the income from their work is no longer enough for the women to live on"

The government needs to get out of women’s way.

Don't be afraid to let women be free. Letting women become their best selves--which requires freedom of thought and freedom of action--is good for us and it's good for you. Check my sources for yourself: link.springer.com/chapter/10.100…

🧵by @NathanPGoodman on how mainline economics explains pervasive institutional dysfunctions and how a genuine radical liberalism protects the conditions of social discovery that make LGBTQ emancipation possible.

My @HayekProgram colleague @NovakMikayla has a new book out called "Liberal Emancipation." She has brought together a great group of scholars to analyze the emancipatory aspects of liberalism! I am proud to have a chapter in this book. Read on to learn what I argue... 🧵
