Just learned that ‘ciao’ is a contraction of the Venetian greeting ‘s’ciao vostro’ ([i am] your slave). ‘Ciao’ coming from the early-medieval Latin word for slave: ‘sclavus’ > ‘schiavo’ > ‘ciao.’
