The aging Interstate Bridge costs $1.2 million per year to operate and maintain. If not replaced, the bridge is estimated to require $270 million in capital maintenance by 2040 — a figure that does not include the cost of a seismic retrofit.

Transit has always been part of the Interstate Bridge. Electric streetcars operated across the bridge from the day it opened in 1917 until 1940. Our Program’s transit investments will improve multimodal access and travel time reliability for people crossing the Columbia River.
