My latest for @pelliclemag spotlights Scotland’s oldest winery, @cairnomohrwines . Founders Judith and Ron are wonderful people who make excellent fruit wines with local (often foraged) ingredients. Writing this one was a real delight. pelliclemag.com/home/2024/8/19…
When I worked news shifts, at some places I’d write 6-10 pieces a day. I’d leave feeling so frazzled all I was good for was lying in a dark room. It’s also pure churning, minimal checking — I’d set a goal of at least one original quote a day and even that was exhausting.
Regional press giant Reach has launched a drive to increase story counts across its titles, Holdthefrontpage reports. It reports on an email, sent by a senior Reach editor, suggests reporters should be writing EIGHT stories per shift holdthefrontpage.co.uk/2024/news/reac…
As long time stockists and proud supporters of Judith & Ron's work, it is great to see them getting such a lovely write up, do take a gander. Spring Oak, Mulled Elderberry & the Elderflower Sparkling (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions) are the pick of crop for us!

After tearing my hamstring at jiu-jitsu on Monday, I can no longer make it to @GuildFoodWriter awards tonight. Gutted to miss it but wishing all the shortlisted writers, editors and producers the best of luck! Next year, I’ll be sure to skip Monday’s no-gi class!
Congratulations to all!
Long live Pelli!
Advice for scholars: next time you lecture on Kant and revolutions at “Downing” (@DarwinCollege) Cambridge, make sure your hair is neatly tied and that you’re not blonde. Or else your research impact will be on the @spectator libido section.
It was a pleasure to speak to Chris. He really opened my eyes to the reality of trying to open, and subsequently run, community-owned pubs.
☕️ Grab a coffee (or a beer!) and read this brilliant piece about the challenges of community pub ownership written by @JLSmithwriter. It includes a focus on The Fox and Hounds, Ennerdale in #Lakeland, with our data + an interview with our Head of Policy & Comms @ChrisCowcher
The reality of organising and running rural community-owned pubs is not as simple and enjoyable as mainstream media would have us believe. In this article, I examine why that is. Very excited to see it published. Thanks to the wonderful @pelliclemag for giving this story a home.

In this week's newsletter, I say goodbye to an Edinburgh institution: The Jazz Bar jlsmithwriter.substack.com/p/the-jazz-bar
Gutted to learn about The Jazz Bar’s closure. It’s a place I visited on my first trip to Edinburgh and one I have frequented regularly since moving here, It was an honest venue that put music and musicians front and centre. The city will not be the same without it.
My latest article: how Cumbria’s lack of food-centric publications does a discredit to its gastronomic sector and results in the distortion of Cumbria’s food identify. jlsmithwriter.substack.com/p/cumbrian-foo…
It blows my mind that Cumbria has 13 Michelin-starred restaurants (15 stars total) but no food-centric print publication. Surely there’s demand for something like Taste Cumbria Magazine to get back into circulation?
Inspired by Do Ho Suh, I wrote about the idea of home for the latest edition of Marra. jlsmithwriter.substack.com/p/home-is-a-pi…
Wrote something a little bit sillier than usual for this week's edition of Marra. Have you met a Janet B before? jlsmithwriter.substack.com/p/a-food-write…
In this month's round-up I focus on Michelin star news, the launch of a new set lunch menu, and a restaurant's miraculously quick opening. #edinburgh #restaurants jlsmithwriter.substack.com/p/edinburgh-re…
