Games are released in 2019 with worse looking water than sms (from 2002). This is super cool to see how they did it!
Here's how the artists at Nintendo did water in the GameCube/Wii era. Two scrolling textures, blended together with Multiply, put through a threshold lets pixels through if they are 80+% opaque or less than 15% transparent. Simple, but very effective.
