Are Maslow’s theories all forgotten now?? Apart from that we have a mental health crisis in children, can no one see the connection?? Their most basic needs are not being taken care of!?! My son said he nearly wet himself in class (yr7) too, he’s dyslexic & struggles as it is!?

Sheffield Star story about pupil wetting himself after being denied access to the toilet. Am aware of other cases like this. Concerns of parents re humiliation of it, staying with that child, echoed in other cases. Are schools weighing this up,in policies? thestar.co.uk/education/outw…

7/ It troubles me deeply to see that school staff and children alike continue to battle ill health. The impact is far reaching. Perhaps, one day, health and well-being will be prized as highly as attainment data, attendance figures & inspection outcomes. They really should be.

It doesn't really matter what I say on here, it's guaranteed that someone will be angry about it. Someone will be furious and say I am making things up, or grifting. Someone will suggest that I'm exploiting parents because I don't work for free. In a way, that's quite…

This may indeed be a crisis, but to insist on calling it an ‘attendance’ crisis not only unfairly lays blame at the feet of parents and children, but risks not seeing the bigger picture and understanding what needs to change. 2/

Have you told that to your LA’s who have a duty to provide an education (not only in a school setting)? How many young people want to learn, want to build peer relationships, trust adults again but their LA have let September come around without sourcing provision? With an EHCP!

I make no apologies for saying the best place for children is in school. The Tories tinkered around the edges of a generational challenge. Labour are gripping it. This week must be back-to-school week, not just for some children, but for all children. thetimes.com/uk/politics/ar…

We need more honesty and greater perspective about school attendance issues, and much less parent blaming. Illness absence is more than ten times the scale of term time holiday absence. Mental health is a much bigger (and rapidly growing) cause of absence than birthdays.

Connect the dots between the SEND crisis and the Attendance crisis - when children do not get the support they need in school they become unable to attend, and then the system blames the family and fines/prosecutes parents (...make it make sense!)
